First off, just want to say hi to everyone and thank you in advance for any and all replies. I have been a long time lurker, but just became a member.
As the title states, I am getting ready to take my prized 87 IROC out of the garage for the first time in nearly 17 years. This was my first car in high school, so I have many fond memories with this car and it is very special to me. The car is a maroon/gold car with tan interior and a 305TPI (auto).
The car ran when I put it away nearly two decades ago, It currently has about 90K miles and is all stock except for a 1LE aluminum driveshaft, K&N filters, and cat back exhaust. My question is what should I plan on replacing when I finally get this thing out. I was thinking fuel pump, injectors, belt, hoses, all relays, fuses, tune up, brakes, tires, shocks and of course all of the fluids. Anything else you guys can think of or recommend? The car did have a hard time starting when I put it away, but I think it may have been a relay gone bad.
You got it down basically any fluid and you will have some rubber seals and gaskets go bad since its been sitting so long. We need done pics, and why did you lock her away for so long?
Plus, not included in picture....All Fluids flushed, filters, antifreeze, hoses, vacuum lines, belts,PVC grommets, Injectors, POSSIBLY a fuel pump and reg, Water pump, T-Stat replaced, and a Transmission service.
Runs like a raped ape now!
So.......you can start there.
Oh, and on replacing all the relays....I had 1 bad relay out of them all. It was for the High Speed Heater Fan. So......point to ponder
And I dare to ask why it sat for 17 years...? WOW

Yeah I figure about $2K or so to get it back to where its running properly and safely. The reason why it sat for so long is I basically put it in my garage after high school and it never really saw the light of day since. Got busy with school, then more school, work, got married had kids, etc... I am at a point now where I would like to get behind the wheel of my first car once again. I have had many cars since this car and currently own some nice cars (about 10), but I have always had this car in the back of my mind. I recently had the opportunity to go back to my high school for a visit and all I can say is when I pulled on to the street where the school is, it was like I never left. Sounds corny, but in an instant I remembered exactly what it used to feel like. Bell used to ring and I would make a B Line for my car with friends. Good ol days. So now its time to wake her up. Can't wait to hear her run again!
On the stored for 17 year thing........... I asked a guy once why his sat for 20 years............His reply was something along the lines of....well....."bars, guards, and tall walls."
I didn't push the question any further!

That's pretty damn funny! Luckily my situation did not involve any guards or bars (steel kind).
I am looking forward to getting this thing back in running order.
Did you end up doing a fuel pump? Any recommendations?
Not on this one, but another I own. Fuel pump is time consuming, but not bad. Look up some links here and pretty much step by step ya. You do have to drop the rear, suspension, exhaust to get to it. Have a real good friend to help ya. Took me and a bud 5 hours
I'm looking forward to seeing this. That's a great story. To still have your first car after so many years is great. You already know how fun these cars are, now you can enjoy your first car during your mid-life crisis. (HAHA JK)
But seriously, I cant wait to see the transformation. I know it will feel great to get behind the wheel of that car again.
