Powersteering cooler
Ok question for everyone im running a 355 hsr t5 car and was wondering i have a champion 3 row radiator in my 88 gta. Can i use the the trans cooler as a power steering cooler and are the size of the lines 5/16 for the power steering cooler return line since my powersteering cooler line is leaking anyway and it aint really cooling anything since its just a long line that loops back to the pump

Re: Powersteering cooler
you don't think that 6 feet of extra hardline that loops under the whole width of the radiator support is cooling anything? if it's not acting as a cooler and doesn't do anything, then why do you suppose that GM went to the trouble and cost of designing it and putting it on ever F body that rolled off the assembly line?
that being said, the PS line is 3/8" and the trans cooler fittings are for 5/16" line.

Re: Powersteering cooler
the return side of a PS system doesn't have that much pressure- you can hold it together with cheap hose clamps... but you might not really gain anything by trying to re-engineer something that GM paid someone to engineer 30 years ago... and besides, you only really need a PS cooler if you are spending a lot of time on a road course making a lot of high speed turns..

Re: Powersteering cooler
A better mod to protect the ps system is to make a heat shield between the steering box and the radiator. The hot air flows off the radiator straight on to the thinner metal end cap of the box. Almost every Saginaw box I've pulled apart from jeeps or firebirds had burnt fluid against the end cap.

Re: Powersteering cooler
Well my plans with the car are to make itna autocross car so there would be alot of turning and doing track racing since we have a race track opening up here in palmer mass so i decided to go with a dorman ps cooler from advance auto which should hold up alright

Sounds good for an auto x car. Just make sure you clean out the cooler real good, only takes a little filings or welding slag to kill a pump.
