Re: flexplate removal

How would you get to the bolts that hold the flexplate to the crankshaft with the torque converter in place?.....

Re: flexplate removal

Impossible, the torque converter bolts to it and will make it impossible to get to the bolts, you'll have to unbolt the bell housing, remove driveshaft, torque arm, cross member, trans cooler lines, speedo sensor connector, tcc connector, and the TV cable, and torque converter bolts and then slide the trans back to get to the flex plate. When re assembling make sure that the hook of the TV cable is connected to the plunger in the trans and then set the TV cable correctly. It's a big job by my standards, I'm sure some people can get it done in about 3-4 hours with the proper tools and garage space

Re: flexplate removal

i got the broken flexplate out of a 92 Caprice by removing the driveshaft, unhooking the trans crossmember from the frame, removing all the bellhousing bolts and torque converter bolts, putting 2 long starter bolts in place of the outermost bellhousing bolts, and sliding the trans back as far as the bolts allowed... then i just used a wrench to remove the flexplate bolts, took the old one out, put the new one in, and slid the trans back forward and put everything back together.. i did have a floor jack under the trans just to take the weight off the trans crossmember and allow things to move, and i might have had a bottle jack under the engine oil pan to support it and take the load off the starter bolts that i was using as guides, but this was back in 2000 and i might not be remembering everything 100% clearly..

total time was just under 2 hours, laying on my back and making it up as i went..

Re: flexplate removal

I did this bout 3 months ago because of broken flexplate teeth. I did exactly what nova said. Use the 2 longer bolts it makes it a lot easier to get things lined back up specially if your doin it by your self. The flexplate bolts are pretty tight. Usin a pipe big enough to slide ur wrench in will help. As well as a flexplate tool to turn it. You can also remove a spark plug or 2 and turn it by the crank a lot of work by it self tho. You can also use a pry bar and turn it by wedding in in the teeth and the trans and move it lil at a time. I don't recommend this way as u risk breakin a tooth. Good luck

Re: flexplate removal

Yep, gets some long bolts that you can screw into the bell housing holes. Slide her back.
