What is this sensor?

Hi guys, I' ve already posted this in the Euro section, maybe here I' ve more chance to solve this: I need to know what is the purpose of the sensor in the red circle.

Siince I' ve a stalling probelm when hot, I' m wondering if is this the reason of this problem.

The engine is a 3.1 V6 LH0.

Thanks guys

Looks to be in the water port so I'm guessing its the fan switch.

Re: What is this sensor?

Thank you TTOP, it' s a starting point. The problem is no wire is connected to it, since the fan was manually activated from a VW(!) relay. But the fan starts with the coolant sensor, am I right? Now, I want to restore the original system, but I have no idea where to start in order ro rewire the fan switch. Can cause this the car to stall due to overheating?

Re: What is this sensor?

The sensor is the water temperature sensor for the computer. There's another sensor at the front left corner of the valve cover for the gauge.

See your other thread for the hot stalling issue fix.

As for the switch circled in red, it is the cold start injector switch. It is not used on the 3.1l engines. The previous 2.8l engines used the cold start switch. Maybe the intake manifold is from a 2.8l engine?

The sensor to the left of it is the CTS for the ECM.

RBob.

Re: What is this sensor?

I don't know the car's history, I think somethings were changed in time... Can this 2.8 manifold damage the engine somehow?

Re: What is this sensor?

Shouldn't be an issue if it is the 2.8 intake. The engines are exactly the same except the 3.1 has a longer stroke than the 2.8. That and the 2.8 is mass air flow and the 3.1 is manifold air pressure, 2.8 uses 1227165 ecm and 3.1 uses 1227730. But no major mechanical differences otherwise. They're both Gen I 60 degree V6 engines.

My car used to be a V6 but I don't remember anything like that in mine, but I'm not sure. I have digital service manuals for 88-90, but 90-92 is basically the same. Since you have the LHO 3.1 your car should be 90-92.

Heres what I found in 1990 Service manual.
