Should I get a Open Element Air Filter?

I read somewhere it helps out with performance, when i mentioned to my dad that I wanted one he said that something about a heater doesnt fit into the filter? and doesnt heat it up so it takes longer for the engine to warm up. I don't know if i described that correctly. Is there away to make this work? I have the stock air intake. Its an '85 Z28 305.

I would go with one because you alow your engine to breathe easier. Your engine right now is trying to breathe through a straw. There is some truth about the engine not warming up quick enough, but its nothing major. My 72 still gets hot pretty quick. I notice the seat of the pants differance and the car sounded bad @ss when you got on it from all the air getting sucked in. You will need a breather (cause they add 400 HP ) to plug the vent tube and a plug to put where the vaccuum hose went and your all set to go. Hope you like it

I disagree.

The Thermac does help with cold operation and preventing that off-idle flat spot. I've got an open element on mine now, and I can tell you it gets a bit sporty out there when cold (and it's cold right now). In hot weather, the opposite occurs as the hot air around the engine will kill power (can even cause stalling).

If all you're doing is running 1320's, then the open element is fine, but a driver works better with a snorkel-type air cleaner. The other issue is emissions inspection, if that's an issue with you, as an open element is not legal (although it's no big deal to put the snorkel cleaner back on every year or two).

The hot ticket is the dual snorkel air cleaner that came on the L69 HO 305's and some Vettes. If you can find one of those, do that. If you can't find one (and there're getting harder to find), there's a tech article on this board that describes how to make one.

i have an 84 z28 (L69) with the dual snokel intake. trust me its nothing special. i put the K@N open element air cleaner setup on my 305. i also have a 2 1/4 inch cowl hood. i don' t feel a difference, so if i were you i would save my money and do some engine work so you can keep up with those 350 guys.

heavy,

According to Hot Rod, your dual snorkle is giving you a full 1/4 second in the quarter mile, whether you know it or not

They are WELL worth keeping on your car.
