Edelbrock RPM Performers

I saw an intake at a checker store earlier today, and I was wondering if it would fit and if I would be getting any torque/hp gain. It was a Edelbrock RPM Performer 7101 Intake. Also I saw, I think it was this one:

Adv. Duration: 308°/318°
Duration @ .050'': 234°/244°
Gross Lift: .325''/.340''
Lobe Seps. 112°

Im not sure though, are they good cams?

These are great parts, but not nessessarily for your car.
A 305 with that intake and cam would require a 4000 rpm converter and some serious gear (4.10, 4.88)
Also, way better heads, compression and exhaust. Then they would make serious power.
The intake itself will work well on a 305 when matched with a cam that suites the rest of your car.
Edelbrock just came out with a new improved "performer intake"
with a holley carb flange that would suite a 305 better.
Check their internet site for the new 2002 products.

I think 'great' is relative, like if you get lucky and the manifold you buy is properly constructed and machined.

You've had trouble with the quality of Edelbrock parts?
I've owned many of them and haven't noticed this.

Curious

Watch out for Jester, then!!!

He hates everything Edelbrock. I've told him he is being ridiculous but there is no reasoning with him

Seems like a healthy cam for a carb'ed engine, too much cam to run with the 7101 intake, IMO. Isn't the 7101 the EGR performer for CB heads? If so, it's advertised to be good to about 5500. The cam you're looking atwould probably be better suited to run with an single plane intake, headers, gears and converter.

BTW, has Edelbrock gone downhil over the years? Been awhile since I bought anything form them, but never had a problem with intakes or Carb's.

Their water pumps sure play the skin flute.

I dont think their quality has gone downhill, I think it sucks and always has. The only real improvement they made over the parts they sold back in the 70's is they started their own foundry. Seems like their QC is by pure luck only, theres apparently no QC department at all. I went through 3 of their water pumps in less than 3 minutes of running time (cheap overseas bearings, which their tech department lied about) and I got a Perf. RPM manifold about a year ago that had one side that was so far off it wasnt even funny. It was narrow too on one end, so the intake surfaces between the head and intake would not have been parallel, not to mention the ports were a 1/4" off. Their response to me was "Sorry"

that cam is way to much for a 305 and 2.73 gears.

it wont start making power till around 2000-2400rpm, and would keep pulling to 7000.
seeing how your rpm range is from idle to 5500, that is not the cam for you.
the intake is good, but like I said before, It will not fit under the stock hood, with an air cleaner, at least on my 89, and my friends 87.
the object of your car with your 2.73 gear is LOW END TORQUE! that cam and intake wont do it.
go with the performer. go with a short duration cam, no more than 262 adverised duration and 220 or so at .050, go with as much lift as possible.
with the 2.73s you really need the low end to get it moving off the line.

the edelbrock cams are about mid 80s designs

TRW had these same basic grinds in their 84 catalog. Not worth the trouble. Get a newer comp.
