Not starting and a weird issue

So I did the tach/speedo fix following the thread on the electronics forum and thought I would post here too just in case.

I did the fix, put the bezel and gauges back on, went to start the car and nothing. No clicks from the battery, no lights, and no buzzing/or ringing.

First thought was the battery was dead. Left it on the charger for several hours, hooked it back, and still nothing.

Didn't touch anything with the wiring and the harness is brand new. The car started up just fine prior to this.

Any thoughts???

Re: Not starting and a weird issue

Is this on the LS swapped 91 in your info section?

Check the main grounds off the battery and engine, and the power junction block, also see that your battery terminals are clean and tight.

Re: Not starting and a weird issue

Yeah its the ls swap.

The grounds were the first thing I checked last night and they all had good connections. The battery and cables are both brand new so there is no corrosion etc.

Re: Not starting and a weird issue

What was the tach/speedo fix? Maybe the wires for the ignition switch got disconnected if you were under the dash.

ignition switch would probably be the next thing to check.

So you pulled the gauge cluster, and now nothing happens when you turn the key(no dash lights). do your headlights still come on?

Re: Not starting and a weird issue

The tach fix was soldering a 200k resistor on the circuit board. The speedo fix was soldering a 30ohm resister and a 150v capacitor on the circuit board. Pretty straight forward fixes.

I removed the bezel, the plastic 'glass' in front of the gauges. The only wiring I touched was the Foglight switch, the cig lighter, and the small connector on the speedo circuit board.

I didn't touch any of the wiring around the ignition switch, and there weren't any exposed wires when the cluster came out.

I do not have headlights either. Literally, nothing is happening when I turn the key.

Re: Not starting and a weird issue

Still thinking a bad ground off the battery.

When you did your swap did you incorporate a power junction block, or is everything still tied onto the main starter terminal?

Re: Not starting and a weird issue

Pocket did the harness and has about 5 power leads on it that I tied into the positive side of the battery. I've started the cat up 25 times at least. This only started after doing the tach.

Re: Not starting and a weird issue

Nothing in the gauge cluster would shut off everything like that, it's probably just coincidence that it happened after fixing the cluster.

Re: Not starting and a weird issue

Agreed. I plan on removing all the battery cables, and cleaning everything (again) to ensure good contact (again).

I'm gonna try and get it in tomorrow afternoon. Hunting season is rapidly approaching and I need to keep getting deer camp setup

Grounds all good. Fuses all good. Battery showing just under 12 volts.

No clue. Frustrated as hell.

Re: Not starting and a weird issue

Do you have power on any circuit? Do you have 12 volts at the starter terminal, or 12 volts at the alternator? Have you ohm tested your main wires and ground wires for excessive resistance?

No battery kill switch you wired in for racing and have it turned off

If you're reading voltage with anything other than the dash gauge, your battery is dead.

You disconnected the battery before pulling the gauge cluster, yes?

I did unplug the negative cable before pulling the gauge cluster. Interestingly enough though, the battery was shot (it's about 4 years old).

When I went to plug the new one in, I've got a wire shorting out somewhere because it was sparking like crazy and melting the contacts on the negative terminal. So now I get to chase down that gremlin.

I've already checked all the battery cables to make sure nothing was touching since I had been messing with those a lot, and yes, the positive is on the positive and vice versa

My thoughts are the wiring behind the passenger header might have melted. I don't think anything in the cluster would make it ground out that bad, but we shall see.

Re: Not starting and a weird issue

Well, got it narrowed down to the alternator. Somehow it is grounding out at that post.....sometimes. I first hooked it up and had it without grounding, and started the car. I got back under to tie up loose cables and clean it up and it started grounding out again.

I have the racetronix hot wire kit, so I need to see if something on that is causing the short.
