Replacement Starter 1987 350

Looking for a smaller/lighter starter for my IROC Z with the 350 Engine. I searched on here and got a few results but my Napa buddy can't seem to find the right one. Our OEM starter has 10 teeth on the gear and anything I found in my search has 12 teeth.
I have another replacement one for the original but it's bug and bulky and a real pain to get into place.

Anyone have a proper part number for a smaller/lighter starter?
Thanks

Which flexplate do you have? Bolt holes for starter strait across or are they at an angle.
I'm assuming you have the original motor with the smaller flexplate.
I like to use the 96 an down corvette starter or the 93-97 LT1 starter is used by some too

Yes both holes straight across from each other. Original motor yes so I am guessing smaller flex plate.

Re: Replacement Starter 1987 350

Had to go wh the OEM replacement as they didn't have the smaller one in stock and I want to drive the car the next few days.
I work away and leave Wednesday so if and when this one breaks I'll get the smaller one.
Just taking a stress break laying under the car now trying to get this damn starter in and man it's crazy right.

Exhaust pipe in the way and no freaking room to get the starter in proper position. It needs to be rotated around 180 deg and is being very difficult

I just take the silonoid off when installing / removing OE style starters. Swapped to a mini and it made the job that much easier!

Re: Replacement Starter 1987 350

Yup after fighting to get it in place and no luck, I fought with it to get it out, took the solenoid off, got the starter in proper position, put the solenoid back on before mounting the starter. Car is running now... SUN's out T-Bars out! My Buddy runs NAPA so whenever I want, I can take this one off and get a refund due to "mechanical failure" and get the mini starter. Just need to find the proper part number which he is working on!
Thanks for the info guys!

Re: Replacement Starter 1987 350

So the brand new starter I put on is whining after about 80km On it. Taking it off now and picking up the mini replacement tomorrow. Now my Buddy that works at Napa, his contact says that either a 9 tooth or 11 tooth drive will work.
Can you guys confirm this?
Here's the one I ordered.

Re: Replacement Starter 1987 350

Ya looks that way. Canadian $ pricing though. I won't be paying anything close to that though as he gives me little above cost on parts.
Thanks for the confirmation on the 11t

Re: Replacement Starter 1987 350

Yup got the Mini starter in that link installed Tuesday evening. I had to use about 3/8" of shims for the proper gear alignment and stock bolts to fit.
Havent ran the Car yet as I am away working now until the 18th.
Started it up a few times and no whining or grinding so should be good to go.
