head gasket??
I know im not a regular on here, but still love third gens So much I just picked up a 84 H.O z 5 speed, the guy said it might have a head gasket blown
I pulled the dipstick and it was milky brown, but thought I would drain oil anyway. The oil was extremely thinned out and smelled strongly of gas Looks like a new fuel pump on it.Where else would it b getting gas in the oil,or maybe that's why fuel pump was replaced and they didn't change oil? Or maybe the gas ate up the head gasket also Its a very solid car,and has most all original items,a garage find, still title from 86 where second owner purchased it.It shows 73k miles Think it might b true Give me a few thoughts, thanks

A head gasket won't put gas in the oil.
I think I saw that very thing the other night on that TV show "Stupid Human Tricks". Never underestimate the stupidity of a previous owner.

Re: head gasket??
A blown head gasket will put coolant in the oil. Do a compression check on all cylinders.

Re: head gasket??
The most common things that put coolant in the oil are bad intake gaskets and cracked heads, then a cracked block along the lifter gallery right above the lifters, from freezing.
As said, a blown head gasket in a SBC won't put coolant in the oil. Not surprised you didn't find one. About 95% of the time when that happens in this kind of motor, it blows between cylinders, allowing compression to exchange between them. Then as the gasket continues to deteriorate and erode it may eventually hit water, allowing water into cylinders or compression into coolant, but that's considerably less common than the between the cyl failure.
Butt hay, if you can't positively identify and definitely cure the source of the coolant/oil exchange, then trying to "repair" that engine is just about guaranteed to fail, since the fault is extremely likely to continue to exist. Replacing the whole thing might be the safest thing to do.
