Will not start after engine noise

Hello all
I will start off with engine spec’s 5.7tpi with 700r4.
The story is that my car will not start after replacing starter, battery, and ignition switch. It was running a few days ago until I had done some work on it. The only thing I did was remove and replace the TV cable also the plenum was removed for new gaskets. When I went to start it made a noise like metal on metal nothing big but shut off the engine and inspected. Sounded like a piece of metal being moved around in a tin can. I took off valve covers and looked at lifters and rockers didn’t see anything visible. Started car to see the valves move and everything looked fine. The noise went away then came back as I listen close to see where it was coming from and couldn’t figure out.
Shut off again and looked in plenum thinking maybe I dropped something inside I know nothing was. I had to get car off ramps so started again and rolled off as I parked her she surged and died. I waited as I went around looking wondering what happened. I then tried again and the starter is not engaging. I’m thinking maybe something was wrong with starter. Would it have made a noise if it was stuck on fly wheel?? Why is it not starting now I need help?

If you did not do the proper shimming procedure when you replaced the starter it's very likely you could have damaged it . You now have to take the starter out , check the gear and bench test it for proper operation , and if all looks good reinstall it using the shimming procedure . It's not ever good enough to put a new starter in using the shims from the old starter , GM starters being kinda like snowflakes , no two are ever perfectly alike and each (starter , not snowflake ) must be installed as though there never WAS a starter yet bolted to the engine .

Good Luck with your diagnosis .....

Re: Will not start after engine noise

Well I figured it out embarrassed to admit but need an oil change. I can’t remember when I did it last the car doesn’t get driven until summer. Should make sure to change every year or twice at least. As soon as I placed new oil in and started car within 15 seconds the rattling went away. I’m pretty sure it was lifters hope they are okay. The starter issue I think is a bad wire coming from ignition switch. I will run a new one to that as moving the wire around I was able to get power. Thanks for the one reply to my dumb mistake.
