Rocker Trunnion: Wasted? Opinions?
In trying to track down some engine noise issues and making the rounds checking valve lash I found that all of my rockers appear to have very worn trunnions.
Check out the video.
Does this movement look unreasonable? Not the side to side but rather how the rocker shaft moves relative to the rocker itself.
For the record, these rockers (Crower stainless steel offset trunnnion) have been in service for about 30 000 miles.

Re: Rocker Trunnion: Wasted? Opinions?
I don't recall ever seeing this before. Then again I wasn't exactly looking either.
I have replacements in a Comp Pro Magnum but the differences between the two won't allow for proper valve train geometry. My .100" longer than stock valves require the .050" offset trunnion to get the rocker tip centred on the valve after I've achieved the narrowest sweep via push rod length.
Looks like something else to rebuild in the off-season.

I wouldn't use that. Send them all back to Crower to be rebuilt.

I'm of the same mind however I'm hoping the parts are available for me to do it myself (I have an entire machine shop at my disposal should I need it).
I've sent an inquiry to Crower asking about the availability of parts.

Crower replied and said if I send them in, they will rebuild them for about $160 USD. I made a further inquiry about kits but they said that's something they didn't have.
I neglected to ask if that rebuild cost was for the part number I posted which is a total of eight rocker arms, or they assumed that I had sixteen and that price wall all in.
Still I think that after the US exchange on the dollar plus the cost of shipping a nearly 10 lb package to the states (about 35 bucks) and whatever they'll charge to ship them back, it'll be something I will investigate doing on my own. It certainly isn't rocket science,

Cross border shipping always sucks for us. When I bought a set of T&D shaft rockers online, I was having problems setting them up. Found out the intake stands were too low for my longer valves. Contacted T&D and they said to send the stands back to them and they would exchange them for the taller ones for the cost of shipping. Shipping back and forth across the border still cost me about $50 but it fixed my problem on a set of $1500 rockers.
Seat belts is another thing. They're date coded for 2 years before I need to exchange them. You can buy RCI Platinum belts which allow for a minimal fee for recertification but you need to send them across the border. When you calculated the shipping cost back and forth, it's cheaper to just go buy new belts. I usually sell off the old belts for $40-$50 which helps cover the cost of new belts.
As for rockers, shipping may seem expensive plus the cost of repair but how much to go buy a replacement set of Crowers? So not all your rockers are damaged. Buy a new set and keep the old set as spares. If more fail, you'll eventually have a complete set of failed rocker to send back for repair.

Re: Rocker Trunnion: Wasted? Opinions?
Sure does. I liked the arrangement that I had when my friend was working in Chicago. Twice a year I'd make the 10 hour trip to pick him up. I'd stay for free, he'd expense the fuel cost and we'd load my van to the roof with car parts mail ordered to his hotel. At one time our dollar had about a 2% premium on the US buck and we made out like bandits. Even paying the tax at the border afforded us cheaper parts than we'd ever get at home. That's long gone now and I'm forced into the cross border business for any big ticket items. Consequently my purchases have dwindled to almost nothing.
A replacement set is about $1000 CDN. And it does appear that all the rockers have about the same amount of play. Once the driving season is officially over, I'll take the car off the road and start the process of making it race worthy for next season. Whether that includes shipping the rockers to California for rebuilding or having a go at it myself will be determined once I've taken them apart on the bench and seeing what's involved.
The rockers are minor compared to everything else involved if I want to race next year. Not the least of which is new short block (at a minimum).

I agree with you , I believe that's more movement than I'd want to see if they were mine ....
