New Gas Tank Sending Unit???

Does anyone know where to find a NEW gas tank sending unit? GM wants $500 for one... no joke. I bought a used one about a year ago from thirdgenparts.com but it went out awhile back. (does not imply parts from them are bad, i have had excellent service from those guys) Does anyone know if any other companies make an aftermarket one? I called all the restoration companies that carry 3rd gen stuff and they all have gas tanks but tank sending units. I know I could put in a Autometer one and hook it up to one of there gauges but my car is all original and I do not want to put in any aftermarket gauges. If anyone knows where I can get one I would really appreciate knowing.

Something's wrong. A new semder should be about $100.

Sounds like they quoted you the price for one with a fuel pump already on it or something like that.

An aftermarket sender will not work with a stock gauge.

Thats what I thought at first but the only way GM sells it is with the unit, the fuel pump, and the screen attatched. They do not sell just the sending unit itself. I am aware I can not use an aftermarket sender and I do not want to. I want an original style unit.

I was told this a while ago; don't know if it holds any water (gas? hehe), but...

The guy told me that GM used to use a stainless steel element for the fuel level. He said eventually, the wiper wears through it. He said newer cars use a carbon-fiber element, and that it could be found under "newer" FWD cars, like a 90's Cavalier or Beretta or etc. He said that all I'd have to do is get the junkyard sender out, remove the little rectangle from the sender, and swap that rectangle onto my car's sender.

Then, thankfully, my gauge started working again, and I never had to try it...

Very Interesting.......

I may try going to a junk yard and pulling one. I would like to know if anyone else has truly done this. I know that one day, good used sending units will be hard to find and as our cars age, more and more will become less available one day. I am hoping a company will start making complete new sending units for our cars. Maybe they will make the sender box it self out of carbon fiber as mentioned above. I called up Hawk's Thirdgen parts and Bruce Q'd $50 for a sender and pump and $15 for S&H I am going to go ahead and get this one so I can have true fuel status again. If anyone knows where to find new ones I would love to know about it.

I had gotten a quote from Mechanics Auto Parts for 125 for a 84 Camaro Sending Unit without a fuel pump. Got it and it was the wrong one. So fired up i just went iwth a Mallory Fuel Pressure Regulator instead of dropping the tank again. (TPI to carb swap)

Pretty sure they make them tho? Check around

I saw a new one in Pep Boys catalogue when I worked there
it was about $350.
I just bought a used one from Camaro Heaven in NH for $75, it even came with the fuel pump still attached

I can get them for $280 or so. Still kind of expensive.
