GTA cluster swap

Hi all. Just a quick question. I have a 1987 trans am, came across what was described as a GTA 140 mph cluster. (almost free) the plastic housing on mine is white on the new one, its black. i put new cluster in, everything seems to work except the trip and odometer. mph works fine. could be from a diff year and wont work or can i just swap old mph gauge out. thanks in advance

Heres what you need to fix your problem. Almost everyone of these have the same issue. Its just one gear and fairly easy to change just take your time and be gentle. I just did mine and works like it should.

thanks for the info. that gear cost more than the cluster. my original one works, it may be easier to just swap them

Re: GTA cluster swap

Trust me you will need to order the gear, my gear was fine too (just was locked up on the shaft), it was from a 50k car and the gear just crumbled to pieces when I tried to remove it. The gear that needs to be replaced is made from a different plastic than all the other gears, apparently the factory didn't want people tampering with the odometer so they put some kind of cheap gear that will break if someone tries to remove/tamper with odometer. Its well worth the money and a nice well put together kit.

Re: GTA cluster swap

Coincidentally, the odometer / trip odometer in my '91 GTA quit working this past weekend.
