Accessory belt orientation, how did the factory do it?

Accessory belt orientation, how did the factory do it?
When these cars were built at the factory were the labels on the belt facing forward where you can read the labels from the front of the car or where the labels facing backwards? Thanks.
This is on an 87 Firebird with LG4 (305 4bbl) engine.
Re: Accessory belt orientation, how did the factory do it?
There might have been a specified direction on these cars, but I can't say for sure. It would take someone with a PAD (production assembly document) from the assembly plant / engine dress line. In recent years, I worked with accessory drives and with the team that likely designed the ones for the 80's Camaros. I can tell you that in the last 15 years I've never seen a direction specified to the assembly plant. It wasn't a critical item. When I went to the plant for assembly trials, this was never a topic of discussion. The goal was to get the belts on and properly tensioned.
Re: Accessory belt orientation, how did the factory do it?
The reason why I asked was that I was getting ready to change out the accessory belts when I noticed that the power steering belt was the original A/C Delco one.
This one has never been changed. Been on the car since 87. We are the original owners of the car. Noticed that the orientation of the AC Delco label on the belt was facing towards the engine block. So, if you look at it from the front of the engine , it looks upside down.
Who knows; maybe thats the way they installed them at the factory, with labels facing the engine block.
Re: Accessory belt orientation, how did the factory do it?
I think that it is random, just based on how the assembler picks up the belt. GM has standards for underhood appearance and I was never challenged (in recent years) by a vehicle engineering team for having a belt on "backwards". I really don't expect it was different in the 80's.
Re: Accessory belt orientation, how did the factory do it?
From the FWIW department....
The '86 Camaro AM doesn't specify that the belt ID to be installed in a specific orientation. It make zero reference to it. I install them, "right-reading" when I'm standing in front of the engine.
I would bet money that the Corvette guys/gals would know.
Re: Accessory belt orientation, how did the factory do it?
FWIW, when I judge the 68-72 Chevelle engine compartments at the MCACN show in Chicago, I don't care which way the belts go on as long as they're the right ones...
