Mystery Connectors

Hello!

Thanks to advice from another user I recently replaced the distributor, coil, and plugs/wires on my newly acquired, non-running, 92 Z/28 and it fired right up! I think I'm still having some EGR fuel issues at idle, but I now noticed another issue some mice caused while the car was inoperable. I apologize for the picture quality, but I believe the red wire connector coming from the harness connects to the orange wired connector and is the EST bypass. What I don't understand is the Orange connector has been chewed threw (the second pic of where the wire attaches to the fender well) along with whatever that other connector is. I wanted to order the EST connector from HAWKS but I have no idea what this other connector is or what it does. Anyone know what this thing may be or have recommendations on connectors?

Re: Mystery Connectors

EST is the brown with black trace that is connected. The red and orange that are damaged likely don't connect to each other and if there's nothing nearby for them to connect to they may just be for options you don't have. I'm not sure what the one in the conduit is. Need a larger view to better orient what may be nearby and you should definitely get a manual so you can refer to the wiring diagrams.

Re: Mystery Connectors

GeneralDisorder, you're the person who suggested replacing the distributor in my car initially so I owe you for getting it running! I've attached a better image of where the wires are located in the engine bay and I've circled them so they stand out a little from the background. I see what you mean about the EST connector so I'm good there, but I can't figure out what the orange wire may be. The wiring diagrams in my Hanes manual just look like Greek to me so I'll have to decipher those a little more, but do you think these are ok to just tape up and leave for now?

Re: Mystery Connectors

Well it seems at least likely that the orange wire that has no end probably went to the one with the connector that's also orange next to the red wire..... The others don't match and don't have matching connectors.

What things aren't working in the car?

You need a factory service manual. Haynes manuals are worthless.

Re: Mystery Connectors

The orange wires are for the under hood light. The red wire is a test connector for diagnostics, iirc.

Re: Mystery Connectors

There are several things that aren't operating "great" but nothing, at least engine wise, that I can tell is not working at all. I thought those wires could be related to the A/C but it's actually working fine. I realized the other day my check engine light hasn't been on because all the lights in the cluster are out, so I'm going to fix that and maybe reading some codes will help me figure out what it could be. I'm just happy the EST is connected fine. I'll grab a factory service manual though and if I can figure it out I'll come back to this thread with an update. Thanks again for all your help! I'm going to try and contribute to this forum more in the future instead of just asking for help...

Re: Mystery Connectors

Thanks, Drew! I was working on my reply to GeneralDisorder before I read your post. That's great news because now I don't have to worry about anything major right there!

Re: Mystery Connectors

Yep, wouldn't hurt to make sure those wires are isolated. Orange is always 12V hot, so you don't want it to touch ground or it'll pop a fuse or burn a fusible link. Red is usually powered under certain conditions too, so again, you don't want to leave it the chance to ground out and create a short.
