Anyone else had bad experience with Stant replacement gas caps?

This past winter I had to smog my car,it had the original GM gas cap but the gas cap failed the visual because the rubber o ring had some tiny cracks in it. I had to buy a replacement from a nearby pep boys to get my smog certificate. I ended up getting a Stant one (non locking). Anyway the damn thing is a piece of crap,it seems like whatever Chinese plastic they made it from swells with exposure to gasoline and it refuses to screw into the filler neck anymore. I’ve even sprayed silicone lube on it but it still has to be forced on!

has anybody else experienced this with Stant caps? What brand are you guys using? Is there a source for the o ring for the originals so I don’t have to deal with this bs anymore? I just think it’s sad we can’t even made a gas cap in america anymore.

I don't think it matters where you buy it anymore, I've always had good luck with buying from the dealer but they're all buying that chinese sh t anymore. Hit and miss....

When I replaced mine I went with an AC Delco OEM style and it was like $5 from Rockauto IIRC. No issues and its been on there about 3 years.

Thanks guys. I’m just using my stock cap for now. It just annoys me that so many parts are defective and shoddy these days. I had brake pads that were manufactured wrong and wouldn’t fit too. Had to go to two autozones before finding a good pair.
Raybestos wheel cylinders made in China now too and were manufactured incorrectly so the bolt holes wouldn’t line up.Nothing like taking your car apart and getting all dirty and greasy only to have to get in your car and go back to the place you bought the parts from and get your money back

That is very annoying, nothing like having to do something twice because of junk parts. I remember replacing the fuel filter on my car and made the mistake of getting one at Auto Zone, wouldn't fit and it was fun driving 15 minutes back stinking of gas to get my money back after fighting with one that wouldn't fit. Silver lining is I found a Napa Gold that fit perfect and is a much higher quality filter than the defective one.

Re: Anyone else had bad experience with Stant replacement gas caps?

I would love to find a vented gas cap that fits our cars. not the "pre-release venting style" where you can vent it by pushing a button, but a kind that is actually vented when pressure gets too high. the ac delco gt195a is sealed and not vented, the duralast 6819a is the pre-release venting kind, would be awesome to have a part number for an actual vented cap . I know they did NOT come on our cars, but I was told that a vented cap from other Gm makes and models would screw on, and some came with a built in vent when the tank gets under too much pressure/vacuum. anybody?

I went through the same thing with my ignition lock cylinder when the original failed last year. I bought a replacement from Autozone, had a lifetime warranty. Remove the airbag, pull the wheel and go through all the steps to replace it. The cylinder worked fine for about 2 months then it broke and you could start the car with no key in the lock! These places carry the cheapest no name junk now. I couldn’t by a Standard Ignition cylinder because they didn’t carry it. The only part they had was one by “lock smart” (Chinese of course” “but it has a lifetime warranty sir!”. Lol! So I had to pull the wheel and do all the work over again to install another lock cylinder. Hopefully this one one fail.

Rock auto is great, but only if you don’t need the parts right away and your order is big enough to offset the shipping. It’s just a shame nobody cares about quality these days. What good is a lifetime warranty if you’re replacing the darn thing every 6 months.

With This Ring...........

"the rubber o ring had some tiny cracks in it."

One option is to replace just the O-ring.
