4th-Gen Starters

Hi, I have a 92 RS 305, and I bet one day I'll need a new starter.

When that day comes, should I get a Remy 96207 starter (for 95-97 F-bodies, according to rockauto.com), or should I get the 96220 (for 98-01)? I can't find any info on why they use two different starters. Which is better?

Or is there an even better factory-type replacement? I see others on Rock Auto that say they also fit 2002. Not looking seriously at aftermarket upgrades yet.

Thanks for any advice!

Re: 4th-Gen Starters

You can use a LT1 style starter on the L98, its a nice stock upgrade

Re: 4th-Gen Starters

They switched to LS1 engines in 1998 thus the different starter. Agree with the above on changing to an LT1 starter. Its smaller and lighter yet stronger and uses fewer volts.

Re: 4th-Gen Starters

Thanks for the replies! Is there any reason the 98 LS1 might work better than the 97?

Re: 4th-Gen Starters

Right: it's one of those "exactly the same except completely different" kind of things.

Won't bolt up.

The LT1 however is a traditional SBC in most respects, including the starter. That one will work.

Re: 4th-Gen Starters

Depends on the headers. It will depend on how well-designed they are. Which some, are EXCELLENT; some, I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

Does a hamburger taste good?

The giant boat-anchor OE one works with most. Anything smaller surely can't be much worse. Would probably improve the odds even with the crappiest of all teh crappy headers there have ever been.

Re: 4th-Gen Starters

Get the bolts for the LT1 starter too. They’re a different length from the giganto original 305 starter.

Works great with my Dyno Don headers and y-pipe.

Re: 4th-Gen Starters

I have researched this a bit in anticipation of mine shitting the bed and the LT1 Remy is a bargain to me, the C4 starter from 89 up is nice too but may not bolt up as easily IMO( might not have enough wire and the LT1 looks more like factory but smaller) and both may require different bolts for the starter. Do a search and you will find a ton of info on this, it’s almost overwhelming.
