84 carb'd crate 305 won't start

New crate motor 305 carbureted
TH375B transmission
Hooker dual competition headers B&M megashifter with tachometer + shift light
Newer stall converter Newer aluminum radiator New battery Jegster torque arm Fiberglass Cowl Hood Dual Transmission Coolers No Air Conditioning utb I have the entire thing in a box and a LOT of parts leftover from swaps and other upgrades throughout the car.

Ran beautifully, sounded badass, engine produces too much energy, battery was always redlining for power going to it. Battery beenreplaced. aStarter got stuck one night It eventually shut off after 5 seconds with the key out of it. There's a kill switch in it that gives me worry in the middle console butthats a toggle one. It no longer lights up with the keys being turned to start it.... it just makes a humming sound when turning key. Gonna probably take a screwdriver to solenoid tomorrow and see if it starts. Also checking wires around starter. Those headers get toasty.
I posted this for ideas and help in addition to being another point of reference for others having the same issue.

I have an idea for you. Find the bozo who mangled this poor Third gen and slap them upside the head for all of us. Then find a mechanic who knows what they are doing and have them do the work for you, OR find someone who knows what they are doing and have them help you with it.

By "engine produces too much energy" I think you have an alternator with a voltage regulator issue. Simply replacing the battery will not change this.

If the starter got stuck cranking you have an issue with the starter solenoid/relay. Fix that before it gets stuck cranking again and you blow up that new battery (I have seen this happen).

The humming sound when you turn key is probably starter not working correctly.

I had never heard of a TH375 transmission until today. According to Google and the Novak Guide it was used from 1972-1976 in "smaller displacement cars".

375 is a 400 with a smaller output shaft (350/PG splines). Pretty much a mongrel.

Bought a 400 once a few decades ago and somebody tried to give me one of those. Had to get a drive shaft to show him it wasn't the right thing. He was the same way. Had no idea such a thing existed.

Mongrel? Is that good or bad? I appreciate any insight into what I have as I'm learning as I go. This car is in such a condition I plan to keep it that way for the rest of my life. Flawless no rust.

Probably not.

It's just .. a weirdo. Unusual. Not many of em out there. Most people don't want em since if they want a 400 in the 1st place, it's because they want heavy-duty; and the small slip yoke then becomes a weak point.

Re: 84 carb'd crate 305 won't start

Ooh, sorry then!

Sounds like you have problems in the Cranking System (Key lock cylinder/ignition switch/battery/alternator/ possible wiring also. Since suspect "Toasty headers" might be cooking the starter/wiring, the headers might need to be replaced w/ cast OE manifolds.

You are gonna need a smart mechanic, willing to diagnose and fix this. And $$ to support his efforts. OR, if you want to work on it yourself, think in terms of putting it back closer to stock, starting w/ the headers. You could bring the alternator to a place for bench testing, too.

Re: 84 carb'd crate 305 won't start

Car still won't start. neutral safety switch, starter enabled relay, starter motor and battery all been tested and found working. need help!
Im gonna get new battery terminals for the side post battery. The cables a bit short and stretched and barely makes good contact to battery. I'm thinking maybe replace the entire battery positive cable? Goes from starter towards left passenger fender. Is there any detailed instructions on this or where it's supposed to go to avoid grounding against itself or anything else?
Some guy we knew came over to help, fiddled with something near battery and boom-- she lived. Atleast until whatever he let go of whatever he was doing and made me shut it off.
