looking for 12v hot in start/run for electric choke
Hey guys, I have an 86 trans am converted to a vortec 383 with an edelbrock carb on top. I currently have the electric choke wired to a switched 12v source on the fuse block but would like to hook it up to something that's only 12v in start/run. it gets annoying having the choke heating up and opening when the engine isn't running. my fuel pump is wired the same way and i'd like to change that as well.
Into the idea of running both the choke and fuel pump to an oil pressure switch however my car only has the single wire oil pressure sending unit for the gauge. If anyone could provide a part number for a pressure sensor that would work along with how to wire it I'd appreciate it.

If you still had either the fuel pump relay or fan relay wiring still around they had what you want

Re: looking for 12v hot in start/run for electric choke
For years now I have been powering my Edelbrock electric choke wire off the wire terminal on the alternator that is 12v only when running (alternator turning over). Its a 10/12 SI alternator, NOT single wire conversion. The one wire conversions use a regulator module with both terminals connected, which is common but not what you want. My setup has worked great since the choke only gets power when the engine is running.
The previous setup I used incorporated a common $15 oil pressure switch that had two terminals and allowed power through the terminals only when oil pressure was above about 5 psi. This also worked good, but I opted for the more simple alternator setup when I ditched the one wire alternator.

for the oil pressure switch, you just run a fused 12v to one terminal and then the choke to the other terminal correct? happen to know what i should look for when looking for a similar switch to the one you used?

tested my alternator wire and its hot when the ignition is turned on so that's a no go. ended up ordering a oil pressure safety switch that I'm going to wire the fuel pump and choke to. Theoretically on a 3 terminal oil pressure safety switch, I could just run the starter terminal to the starter solenoid, the fuel pump terminal to the fuel pump relay, and then the left over prong could just go right to the choke correct?

Good idea to run your fuel pump off the oil pressure switch. I had an electric pump for a while and used the pressure switch for it too. I ended up going back to mechanical pump, but I think every electric pump should go through an oil pressure switch (unless your computer controls it instead). Wiring directly to ignition has several issues, and The last thing you want is to get in a crash and leave your ignition on with fuel just pumping everywhere.
