power steering hydlaulic fluid 1987 305 toi

Greetings to the forum.
Got myself a 1987 305 tpi firebird engine and found that the power steering pump does not use the red dextron atf-fluid i am used to. it has some clear yellowish liquid inside. Any idea if this is normal and what spec hydrulic fluid i have to get to top it up?
Thanks
patrick, germany

Hi, welcome to the forum. I put in Mobil ATF 320, has specification GM Dexron III, like it should be.

thanks, is your stuff red or clear or can it be either, depending on the manufacturer?
it is topped up now and i do not want to drain and flush the system if i do not have to.
cheers,
patrick

It is red. And as I can see on the internet, yellow ATF is made by Liqui Moly, has specification Dexron III G. If there is everything normal with power steering, probbably will be ok.

that figures then, the car has been very thoroughly converted in germany and the shop owner did the conversion for himself. and liqui moly whould be the pricey german choice. i will retain it for now and see how it acts up when i get it running,
thanks

I am from germany too and I think the system was filled with "Master Power Steering Fluid" from Cars & Stripes, which is yellow:

https://store.cars-stripes.com/auswa...3-785l?c=15417.

This is what most people are using for the power steering over here because with ATF the system likes to leak sooner or later. I use this stuff since 2005 and never had any problems on my four firebirds with this.
