Bad Charcoal Canister or just Purge Solenoid? Hissing Noise/Gasoline Smell
So today, I noticed that I hear a hissing noise coming from the front of my car. The front driver's side behind the head lights. All of the hoses were attached to the charcoal canister but there was still a hissing noise. Also after even a 15 minute drive, that part of my car smells like gasoline. Could it be my charcoal canister is going bad?
Also could a bad charcoal canister cause a surging idle/stalling when the car is warmed up?
Lastly, does anyone still make a charcoal canister for our cars? I cannot find one anywhere. Not O'Reilly's, NAPA, Autozone, Rock Auto, Amazon, Advance, etc. Only the Purge Solenoid.
Most of the threads with part numbers are from the mid 2000s...

I'm not able to find a part number either, it looks like the canister for your year range might have been discontinued. They are rebuildable with a bit of work though: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...ebuilt-my.html
I know that's not what you're looking for, but maybe it will be helpful!

I had a similar issue with a strong fuel vapor smell near the canister. I roughly followed the instructions in the above link to rebuild mine, except I used a coping saw to slowly and carefully cut the weld at the top of the canister until it broke free. Mine was still full of charcoal but it was definitely over-saturated. After cleaning an re-filling with new charcoal I used epoxy to glue the top back on. Before proceeding make sure the valve on top is functional because it can't be replaced.

I'm surprised it's been discontinued. I guess I'm going to have to do this rebuild.

Also make sure the check valve isn't leaking. its the small, round thing, about 2" in diameter with 3 hoses coming out of it. its a plunger style valve, and built pretty cheap. its in your photo.
Here is an option for you if you want to start fresh and new, the part number to the connector to the solenoid is also in this link. Everything was plug and play for a 1990, even the canister bracket. check your year to be sure.

I’m in the same process of finding a whole vapor canister. My 86 camaro builds up a lot of pressure where the tank pops from expanding and when i remove the gas cap it releases a lot of pressure. This causes my car to shut off when it’s been running for a long time. I can’t believe I can’t find a new vapor canister and only the valve and vapor canister filter on rock auto. But autozone and orieily don’t carry them. I had to find my answer on this forum and I see it’s true that they just don’t make it anymore. Really disappointing.
