Tech / General EngineIs your car making a strange sound or won't start? Thinking of adding power with a new combination? Need other technical information or engine specific advice? Don't see another board for your problem? Post it here!
Ok so I’m building an engine for my GTA. Now question is. I got the 1557558 oil pan. Now do I need a windage tray for this pan? Has a baffle built in. Did f body cars come with the windage tray? I’ve rebuilt a corvette motor before and it had that tray. The tray available to buy is made for the corvette pan. Or so the info I seen says.
The Moroso pan on my race engine looks similar to that but under the windage plate, mine also has trap doors which restricts the oil movement from going to the front of the pan during braking. I also have a plate at the rear which restricts the oil from going up the back of the pan during hard acceleration.
The goal is to get the oil from the engine back into the sump as quickly as possible and keep it there so that the pump doesn't run dry during whatever type of driving you do.
Do not add restrictors/screens in the lifter valley to force oil to the front of the engine as this delays the oil getting back into the pan.
For my race engine I have 2 modification to make sure there is oil in the sump at all times.
First I use an oil accumulator. If oil pressure ever drops below the lowest pressure I have in the accumulator, the extra oil in the accumulator gets pushed into the engine until the pump makes enough pressure to refill the accumulator. Circle track racers really need this because of the constant g-forces pushing the oil up the sides of the engine will cause oil pressure to fluctuate a lot.
Second, for my engine spinning to 7000+ rpm during a 1/4 mile pass, there's a lot of oil under the valve covers that has to flow through the openings in the head, down into the lifter valley then back into the sump. I did a modification and installed fittings on the back of both valve covers and on both sides of the oil pan and connected them with hoses. This gives the oil a direct path from under the valve cover directly to the sump.
For a street car, these types of modifications are overkill. A basic oil pan built in windage tray/baffle like pictured above is more than enough. It's when you start driving in a more aggressive manner that oil control becomes more of an issue. If you want to autocross then you might want to do a few minor upgrades.
