Intermittent headlight motors going up

For your 88? I believe you'd have the headlight module on the firewall near the brake booster.

I don't think there is an external relay for the headlight motors. The relays are built into the circuit board of the headlight module. You can see a wiring diagram in Post #1277 of my build thread, https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/ltx-...ml#post6307102
I got that wiring diagram from the '88 Firebird Service Manual .pdf file that I downloaded from Post #24 of this thread, https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...ce-manual.html
My own little quick reference guide says that wiring diagram is somewhere close to page 1457 of that .pdf file. It's not fun trying to find stuff in that manual so every time I find something of interest I add it to a spreadsheet that I keep. I recommend you do the same.
And you can find information about using a cheaper and more readily available C5 Corvette headlight module in Post #1561 of my build thread, https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/ltx-...ml#post6402215

Re: Intermittent headlight motors going up
If it is intermittent, it might just be the connection. Every now and then my headlights won't go up. I just pop the hood, give the plug on the headlight control module a little push, and the headlights pop right up. Stays working fine for a while. I'd guestimate and say that this happens maybe two or three times a year.

It's right up there, circled in red. Mine were doing the same thing it sounds like yours were. I needed to open the module up and reflow the solder on the connectors.
Here's a video on YouTube where Fuzzy Dice Projects did the same job on his 91, starting at around the 4 minute mark :
