Cute blonde havin car troubles
Cute blonde havin car troubles
Hey guyzz
I've just tried to switch my 1988 TBI Fbody to 1991 TPI. Everything has started up great so far and seems to be pretty responsive... But, my engine light is constantly on. I can't seem to get the codes out of the light when I jump the two terminals at the ADL port (I'm using a SD harness from Painless). Umm, maybe it has to do with my Map sensor?!? :P I'm also getting a lot of black smoke during idle. I've got everything alse on the car to work so far (keep u're fingas crossed!!)
I have to drive down to Florida for Valentines Day (I'm such a sweetiee) ...so, help me out boyzz!!!
Keep cute...Tar.

That's one way to get peoples attention. For some reason if I used it, I doubt it would work. Doesn't black smoke meaning you're running rich? And I thought the SES light was linked to the EGR.
Thanxs guyzz....that was quick!! U guyz rock...hopefully I'll get this figured out!
I had a similar problem to this one b4, but on my TBI set-up...the map sensor wasn't connected and i was getting this same BLACK SMOKE that I'm getting now.....same prob??!! (all my vacuums are new).
I'm jumping the 2 terminals at my ALDL and the light is constantly on..no blinking!!
And Camaro6spd...if you can find me an answer to my question, u'll get a big kiss...SMOOCH!!
Thanxs boyzz...Tar.

Just for clarification, when you jump the A and B terminals on the ALDL, all you are doing is turning the key to the "ON" position...correct? You are NOT starting the engine, right? If so, that's why the light is staying on. (And no, I'm not asking this question just because you said you a blonde!)
That black smoke is carbon, which usually means it's running rich. But without knowing what code (or codes) is (are) being thrown, there's really no way to tell you where to start.
Are you sure that the ECM from the donor car (the '91 in this case) is good and were you able to see the engine run in that car before the motor/ECM came out of it? (Of course, if they came from the same car).
Kind of reaching here for solutions, but the more details you can give us, the better we'll be able to figure this out.

Mike

WHATT?????
Wrong, oil is not blue smoke, Bad valve steam seals = blue smoke, you should check your facts buddy, this has been stated many a time on the board un4givin89
Are you joking???
The reason blue smoke occurs is due to bad valve steam seals Leaking oil down the valve stems into the combustion chambers. Oil travels into the heads where, it then due to the effects of gravity, tries to travel back down to the oil pan. This is why you need valve stem seals on the valve stems because the oil traveling back down to the pan gets onto the valve stems and will seep down the stem into the combustion chamber causing the blue smoke.

Jay, if you tell the truth, I will tell you how to fix your car....
Good gag though. You sure sucked these guys in..ha ha ha ha ha ha
BTW, did you have to post it on so many boards? And you forgot the ONE board that probably can help you. But we aren't easily sucked in on the "cute blonde" gag.
well ok guys the jokes up. I guess I haven't checked all the other posts I made yet - but I needed some help and I've been at this for a couple of days now. So I got my girlfriend to type and add some flare to it. I got some help, thanks, I've had the car running for a bit now and this has really stumped. I've excluded all obvious.
I don't remember who asked about the "when is the light really on...? " but it's on constantly from the time the car is running to the time the car is shut off... I've tried resetting the computer... disconnecting the battery to the two minute mark... all the little stupid stuff...
everything went together great... now I've checked my Pontiac firebird book and I can't find any routes to take... (yes I''ve got the big big book right from GM....
thanks guys- (for the responses to my GF)

Sorry guys there just arn't many thirdgeners arround here and I get excited when I see another. The club I am in has like 20 fourth gens,4 thirdgens, 2 seciond gens and 1 first gen. I am getting sick of there only being fourthgen guys out. Ok I am done ranting and it is too early in the am. later
by the way nice ploy for getting quick help
I might just have to use that some time

Interesting problem...and an even more interesting way of solving it, pretend to be a chick
Are you sure the painless harness will allow you to pull codes through the ALDL? Ive never used any of their stuff so I wouldnt know. Black smoke most of the time indicates a rich condition...did you check you injectors? Does it start easily?
Hmm, Im trying to think of something that would cause the computer to dump fuel...
If I were you I'd call up painless and see what they say.

Too bad you gave up the joke; you could've had a couple hundred guys coming over to help!
What kind of fuel pump did you put in? Is your return line kinked or regulator bad?

1: Did you replace the ECM? (gotta make sure hehe)
2: Are all sensors connected?
3: Are your injectors leaking?
4: Is the fuel Pressure correct?
ECMs are different, so make sure that was changed, and working properly. If the car is in the run position, but not running, that is when the 2 terminals should be jumpered. If you get nothing then, it's either the harness or a bad ECM. If it it not easy to jump the terminals I'd try swappiung with a known good ECM, but I'd run all other tests first
2: If any number of sensors is reading wrong, you could run into a nice rich condition
TPS, O2, MAF (or was that year speed density) CTS, and I guess thats all I can think of off the top of my head
3: Injectors leaking and fuel pressure. To check get the $25 fuel pressure gauge from pep boys, that connects to a schrader valve. It will connect on the passanger side fuel rail. Plug it in, turn the key to the run position. You should get (this is off the top of my head so.....) around 42-45 psi. It should hold this pressure. If it leaks the pressure, first, clamp off the fuel return line (in a rubber area) now pressure could go as high as 60 psi (again off the top of my head) if it holds, you have a bad fuel pressure regulator (I doubt this would cause a rich condition though...) If it still drops immeaditly (sp) after pressurizing, clamp off the intake line, see if the pressure drops. If it does, your injectors are leaking, and could cause a rich condition.
Your problem is not oil, everyone knows, oil burns blue. If it's just a puff on startup, then it is probably the valve guide seals, if it is constant, you either have basicall no valve guide seals, or more likely, oil is blowing up past the rings, and thats not good
You couls still have an oil leak, but that probably wouldn't set a code (unless it messed something else up), and would cause a blue hue to the smoke.
Personally I would suspect unplugged/bad sensors or a bad ECM. I don't remember if you had to set the TPS on a 91 or if that had the initial reading as 0.
Good Luck

Ask Clinton. He thought he "had it made" when he setup a "private dinner meeting" with Canadian Prime Minister Jean Cretian, only to find out Jean was a guy. Boy, was he ticked off.

tpi_roc GOt the LiteStep or After step logo
That is the NeXTSTEP logo. AfterStep doesn't have a logo, and litestep is a gay windows shell trying to mimic *nix's desktop's.
Convert....
I haven't come to tell anyone on this board yet but I drive a Honda in the winter... Civic dx converted into DOHC Vtech civic... My garage that I split w/ my buddy is a division of a new company in the States (PA) called Dynamic Motorsports. We've all got pretty fast Hondas...
I had my TA out tonight though, It's pretty responsive... A definite improvment over my TBI setup I've got small things to work out now...
