I have a stupid question guys, I have a 1987 GTA it is a disc brake posi traction car. I have an axle seal leak on my passenger side. My question is which bearing and seals do I have. Im so confused. Im on rock auto trying to figure out what I need. I got options for 7.75 or 7.625 how do I know. Not an axle expert by any means LOL. Thanks in advance guys

Yes, you should have the 7.75" Borg Warner rear end.

How were you able to ascertain that?

OP, how many bolts hold the rear diff cover on?
9 bolts = 7.75"
10 bolts =7.625"

1987 GTA's came with the Borg Warner rear, unless someone swapped it.

Re: 1987 GTA AXLE QUESTION

Uh, I'd go with Tom 400's answer. Go under the car and count the bolts on the diff cover. Everything else is a guess after almost 40 years...

Re: 1987 GTA AXLE QUESTION

The other clue (in case you run out of fingers to count bolts) is that the Borg axle had a rubber plug in the rear cover for the oil fill/check.

Re: 1987 GTA AXLE QUESTION

Another thing to bear in mind if the axle is a Borg unit - The axle shaft seals may be different for the two sides.

The seal is outboard of the bearing, and the bearing R&R will require a substantial press to do the work. Obviously, there is no re-using the bearing/retainer collar once it is pressed off.
