Mechanical fuel pump-engine latch stuck

Hi,
I have a 86 camaro iroc z and I am replacing the mechanical pump. But the latch inside the engine that I am suppose fit before inserting the pump it seems to be stuck. Is it suppose to be like that in some engines?

I have seen the use of a hacksaw blade to lift but I tried and go nowhere.

any recommendations much appreciated.

happy holidays!

Re: Mechanical fuel pump-engine latch stuck

Not sure about "latch"... sounds like maybe you're talking about the fuel pump drive rod?

It's about ½" diameter and 5" or so long. Its upper end is driven by an eccentric on the cam; its lower end pushes on the arm of the fuel pump. To make changing the pump out easier, it helps to let it fully retract up into the engine. You can even put a longer bolt in this hole right here, FINGER TIGHT ONLY, to capture it in its uppermost position, once you get it up there. You can see in the photo how that bolt hole lines up with the passage in the block for the rod.

Have your assistant bump the motor over in small increments with the starter while you push the rod up with your finger. Have them stop when the rod is as far up as it will go, and thread the bolt in if you need to. Install the pump, remove the long bolt, and put the original bolt back in, with a drop of sealer on the threads.

That's because it really IS eeeeeeeezzzzzzzzyy, with or without the hacksaw, once you get your brain wrapped around what's going on.
