Tech / General EngineIs your car making a strange sound or won't start? Thinking of adding power with a new combination? Need other technical information or engine specific advice? Don't see another board for your problem? Post it here!
Hi, I’ve purchased a 1989 convertible. The keys got lost between the previous owner and myself. Is it possible to get a key made just by providing details of the car such as VIN, body etc? Or is there a stamped number in the car somewhere which would help? I don’t want to go down the road of replacing the ignition key as this affects the locks and trunk. Cheers
Replacing the ignition key doesn't affect the doors and trunk, they're separate keys. You'll need to find out what vats value you need and order a matching blank, and then either take the ignition lock cylinder out and to a locksmith to have a key made, or just buy a new one with key, and have that key copied to your VATS chipped key.

Not sure if this helps you or not, but.......
The ignition key has absolutely nothing to do with the "locks and trunk" (presuming your talking about the door locks and trunk?)
The square key with the resistor "pellet" in it operates the ignition only, the round key operates the door locks, trunk lock, trunk storage compartment.

And this brings up another pain in the azzz your gonna need to deal with, since you say your car is a 1989;
Are you aware of "VATS" ?
If not, your gonna have to be. Since you don't have the ignition key, your gonna have to deal with VATS (Vehicle Anti Theft System). That little resistor pellet in the key had 10 different possible resistances, and if the VATS module doesn't see the right resistance, the engine isn't going to start. VATS inhibits two things if it doesn't "see" the right key resistance, the starter's ability to crank the engine and the ECM's ability to pulse (operate) the fuel injectors. There are several ways to deal with VATS, you will be best served by searching VATS here and reading and learning about what your up against here.
