If you are refering to the vats system with the pellet in the key, you will need to know what resistance the original had..(o-999) ohms. A dealership will be able to cut a key off your vin, but they still may need to know what resistor so the pass key module will accept the key.

You dont program the key. There is no circuit on the key even. It's just a resistor. You can check the resistance of your current key with an ohm meter and do what you want with that but you're much better off just going to a dealer to get a new one cut.

I went through this last fall. I lost my keys the day before our wedding

First of all, a normal GM key will not fit in a VATS key cylinder. GM can cut you a new key using your VIN but you now have to pay for them to go into the database. The ****ty part is that the VIN search will only give you the proper pattern to be cut into the key. It won't tell you what value the "chip" has. And the "chip" is actually a diode.

The VATS keys are also around $60

It is a resistor. I've bypassed enough of them with 20 cent resistors to know.

GM calls it a diode. I think it's another term for resister.

But you can go ahead and get your drawers in a bunch if you'd like

A misinformed guy at the parts counter might call it a diode. A diode has a totally different purpose in electronics.

Folks are still calling them chips. I've had people try to tell me it's a tiny computer or IC.

The truth is it isn't. It's a simple resistor.

I found it here in a tech section. I had to do it the old fashoned way and look at a wireing schematic.

Actually, I got "diode" from my 1989 Pontiac Firebird brochure. I couldn't imagine GM literature being wrong. After all it does mention the "new for 1989 dual convecture exhaust".

That`s the procedure to learn the pass lock sysytem, don`t confuse that with your pass key system. The pass lock and pass lock II systems have a transponder in the ignition tumbler that sends a signal to the dash head and the head sends another signal the PCM..as long as it all matches it will alow spark and fuel..you don`t have this though. Were stuck with the tumbler that breaks..but hey at least when we change the computer, dash head or crank sensor we don`t have to relearn the security system.
