CTS (Coolant temp sender question)..not sensor
So this has been BEAT to death here lol. This is a serious question that I haven't saw talked about. My 91 GTA with the 5.0 looks to have a 2nd gen sender in it (G1852). These ran in 2nd gens until 78. There are other styles of senders resembling the G1852...but none used in gen2s. Is it possible that in the 80s, when they swapped gens...that they ran with these? I know that I need the 213-4793 sender..although it looks nothing like mine. Has anyone tried a G1852 in their cars with success?

I'm positive. The coolant fan switch is on the passenger side. I also saw a video last week of another car that also has this 2nd gen sender in it. Crazy enough...the small block in these cars are also listed as 1st Gen small blocks so it makes me wonder if the G series sender would work. My car has been in the family for 20 years and is stock

There is no difference whatsoever between 2nd gen gauge sending units and 3rd gen ones. Only difference in any of em over the years has been, in the early-mid 70s they changed the hole size in the heads from ˝" pipe to 3/8" pipe (newer ones are smaller); and factory SUs usually have a "mushroom" style connector, whereas replacement ones have a regular slide terminal, butt the factory connector on the end of the wire fits either one. Evidently it got replaced before you got the car. Electrically they are all identical and have been since at least as far back as the 50s, whenever they started using electrical gauges.
A photo would help identify what you've got.

Ok! That makes sense to me. Obviously when finding parts, older gen used SU's say "doesn't fit" but I was betting that indeed it probably did since what's in it now is a mushroom style connector and not a spade style. I ordered a spade style SU..but its good to know that either would work

I don't know of any mushroom style ones available in the aftermarket, butt that doesn't mean there aren't any. Doesn't matter in any case since the connector on the wire fits either style equally well.
Factory ones were "mushroom" style; replacement ones are generally the "spade" type. Beyond that, there are only 2 variations; 3/8" pipe, or ˝" pipe. Older heads used the larger size. If you have that, your OE heads have been swapped for some older ones.

Re: CTS (Coolant temp sender question)..not sensor
Reviving this thread. On my 1989 IROC Z LB9 305 TPI Camaro, I need to replace the left(passenger) temp gauge sending unit. It has the “Mushroom” terminal and connector,
The Mushroom terminal is so close to the exhaust manifold I suspect the spade terminal (newer style) sending unit (213-4793 AC Delco):will be too close, or touch the manifold.
I located a AC Delco G1852 sender, on Amazon. Product descriptiion lists a .84 diameter thread.
QUESTIONS Will the G1852 thread into my cyl head ? I think no.
Has anyone found that the spade style terminal, sending unit and it’s terminal and wire clears the OE exhaust manifold.
Thank you, MC

Yes, it does. Can even be bent to point the wire differently if need be.
