Smeding Chevy 427 SB Long Block
Guys, I have an 87 Monte Carlo SS with an 89 TPI on a 350 Goodwrench motor. As you see in my sig, I have some mods. I am considering going with a Smeding 427 small block motor. Their long block has 210 alum heads and the cam specs are as follows: .510/.521, 231/236 @ .050 111 LSA. My question to the forum is this: Is the cam too big to run on the street with a Holley Stealth Ram running speed density SAUJP or EBL P4 Flash. I am tuning using TurnerPro and parts from Moates.
There is a member on the forum who bought a 383 from Smeding with the 231/236 cam. The last post I read from him indicates that he is having issues with drivability with his 383. I think he is having difficulty tunning. Maybe he can dhime into this thread.
Thanks,
Fred

Re: Smeding Chevy 427 SB Long Block
I'm running a stock port HSR. I'd imagine quite a bit of work should be done to one to be proper for that application. The stock port is near a 1204 gasket. I'd might be looking into a different intake for that. Maybe even a single plane.
As far as tuning, I'm sure it can be done, but I jumped from a eblp4 to a fitech and with me doing nearly nothing tuning wise, its significantly better driving than a fairly worked over former tune. Or any previous iteration of engine and tune for that matter. Not saying I'd use fitech on your application but I'm definitely to a point that newer computers offer much more. That being said, the right person can probably have it working well with the old computer, just how much time do you want to put into it?

I agree w the HSR not flowing enough up high. I have a pro flow XT on my car and it will flow well up high for that engine. I have similar hp/tq to that engine. I would probably just go w a new/modern efi system as well. Holley also makes a new intake that looks awesome and would also work. I believe it's a new stealth ram intake. And has a high or low version.

Thanks Guys. Firechicken82, I have been looking at the Pro Flo XT ever since you posted pictures and info about it.

I actually was looking at this engine before I put my blower on. It would have played well w the pro Flo xt. You just need to get one w larger injectors. The 29lb injectors are good up to 450 hp. You can get it w larger injectors. When i was getting ready to get my car on the dyno w the blower there was part of me that was half expecting a catastrophic failure. If that happened, I was gonna get the 427 w less compression and put the blower on that!

Firechicken82, your area is where my wife and I went to purchase my 87 Monte SS. Great people. They even transported it to us to South Jersey for just the cost of gas. Great people.
I have always wanted a SB 427. Not for HP but for, well coolness. Allot of folks have LS motors in their Montes and other have 383/400 in theirs. How many folks have a SB 427 in their Camaro/Monte. I have always strived to be different, and the SB 427 fits my bill. i just want to be sure that the cam will not become an issue for tuning for the street. 231/236 duration is allot for the street. What I want is a motor that idles will a slight lope. Will perform well at street speeds and be enjoyable to cruise. New Jersey doe not check emissions on my old Monte. SS, so I am good there. But the state does do road stops to check stuff.
I will take your suggestion for the Pro Flow XT seriously. Hate to sell the Holley Stealth Ram, but oh well. Edelbrock shows that they do not have any to sell. Gotta wait.

On a 7 liter, 230 duration isn't nearly as 'big'. I wouldn't fret it much.

That's a big engine and w modern efi I think you'll be able to tune it for good drivability. Once it's tuned all you'll need are some sticky tires!
