MAF Code 34 Help
So I have a code 34 on my 1986 Camaro 5.0 TPI.
Car has 66,000 miles.
I followed the Diagnostic Tree which lead to the MAF sensor being bad.
Car runs well except the idle is rough and at times wants to stall.
I installed a new BSE #57854
Car will start and idle. The second you touch the throttle, car stalls and will not run.
I’m not sure what the problem is. Any suggestions ?
Car has new spark plugs and distributor cap and rotor.

Re: MAF Code 34 Help
I cant speak for anyone else and the experiences they have had but I had code 34 MAFalso on my TPI car and tried a few of the aftermarket MAF sensors including the BSE one you mentioned and a few others from other parts store. the code would go away but always came back. I finally broke down and purchased a used OEM GM MAf from hawks and I have not had any issues since

Re: MAF Code 34 Help
Howell EFI has used OEM MAFs with a money-back guarantee. I thought 1985 MAFs were different from 1986 to 1989 MAFs. I'm not into the pre 1987 cars though.
Used with production TPI systems from 1985-89. Recommended for replacement on stock systems or for any engine with non-standard displacement, or low-idle vacuum camshaft. Used units sold with a money-back guarantee. $150.00
#MA201 - MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR: 1985-89 TPI (Used) - Howell EFI

Are they Reman Units ?
85’s have a one year MAF sensor. Won’t work on 86-89 cars.

I think they are just nice quality used original OEM Bosch MAFs.
Howell EFI is a very reputable company that has been around for many decades.

Re: MAF Code 34 Help
Sorry. I guess they need to update their website then. It sounded too good to be true.
How come you can get forty-eleven different size and brands MAFs for a Fox body Mustang that will work fine with the ECM but you can't even get a effing stock rebuild OEM MAF for a TPI engine that works for crap and none of the new ones are even close to right?
3rd gens suck!!!
I'm into turbo Buicks too. I can get a MAF translator for them and use every damn MAF GM has ever made with it.

Yea I was wondering the same thing.
There is a market for 3rd Gen’s and I’m not sure why everyone stopped making MAF sensors and relays for them. The ones being made aren’t right.
I don’t know where to look next besides spending $150 on eBay for a used unit that may be the same as mine.
if anyone has gotten a new or Reman unit to work in their car can you let me know ?
Pete
