Motor Mount Problem
Greetings,
i am new to this board and need some help. i was trying to replace my passenger side motor mount today in my '82 TransAm and came across the problem of removing the mounting bolts on the upper side of the mount itself. Correct me if i am wrong but it seems like you have to disassemble the whole front suspension to be able to reach the nuts holding the bolts in place.
any tips, tricks, hints, suggestions, or incantations to the auto gods would be appreciated.
oh yeah... also, where can i find some replacement rubber grill assemblies for my '82 front bumpuer cover?

As far as the motor mount goes, I have heard that it can be done without taking everthing apart. But it still isn't any fun.
For the grill I would try Classic Industries 1-800-854-1280.

anyone else have an answer on the stupidity of GM engineers???
i would rather do this myself than pay someone... the Haynes maual was a bit misleading.

I'm having the same problem... I attempted to take the motor mounts off to replace them only to find the nuts on the other side.... How the hell are you supposed to get in there to hold the nuts? Couldn't get a socket in there the space is just too tight. Am I missing something or what?

Go to Sears and get a 15MM (I think) swivel socket and a long extension, and come in from the bottom with swivel and extension, while holding box/open end on the bolt from top. Be careful not to drop parts in crossmember although magnet might get them out it will take more time.
on re-assembly go reverse but bend a coat hanger tight around the nut and use a small coat of silicon to hold the washer to nut, bend the hanger to get the angle to line up with bolt and turn from top w/ ratchet to start nut on bolt once all are started get out the swivel again and run'em down.

When I replaced my motor mounts, I used grease to hold the washer to the nut and then used a wrench with some tape on the jaws and wedged the nut into the jaws. You just need to hold it there long enough to get a couple threads then you don't need the tape. To clarify, the tape was stuck to the jaws of the wrench, it's not to stick the nut to the wrench, that doesn't work very well.. Good luck..

After I got the hang of it it worked pretty good. I was rather relieved at that point because I could not get my headers on without new mounts (they had sagged so far that the drivers side header would not even go flush with the head without interfearance). A buddy of mine, who is a mechanic for a living, was telling me "your gonna' have to take off the lower control arms, man." I didn't want to hear that because, I had just got done fighting new Eibach springs into the front end, and was not taking them back apart. Give it a try, my tool cost me nothing and if you work on cars you probably have some form of RTV hanging around to hold washers.
