My heat doesn't work to well.

I have a quetion about my heater core. I changed my heater core this summer, after 2 years without out heat( that was fun ). Well when i was finished and put everything back together i noticed that the wire that hooks up to that little door, the one that opens and closes the heater core off, was broken. It is located under the passenger side kick panel. I hope someone knows what i am talking about. Anyway i had to rig something up to make the door open and close but I don't know if the door is opening or closing all the way. I say this because the heat coming out of the vents isn't very warm and I remember before the heater core went bad I really didn't even have to have the heat on just the temp adjust lever set to hot. So my question is, is there any way to know if the door is closing all the way without tearing the dash apart. I could have swore that before i tore the dash apart I could hear the door opening and closing. If someone could tell me if I am correct or not I would appreciate it. Thanks

Try moving the lever to both extremes of it's travel. You should be able to hear the door "thump" shut.

Also, there should be some resistance to movement, if it moves really easy, well, you need to tear into the dash.... Sorry.

Something else to consider is, is the heater core getting good flow? I replaced mine, only to have it get plugged up a year
later... (makes it kinda cold.....)

Have fun.

I'd take the kick panel off and have someone move the adjuster around to see if the door moves.

Re: My heat doesn't work to well.

I know this post is really old but I'm having the same issue and believe the cable that opens and closes the heater core door is broken. The hot/cold lever moves way to
easy and I don't hear any thumping noise like you should hear when moving that lever back and forth. Does anyone know where I can get a new one or will I have to rig something up?
Also will I need to remove the dash to do this job?
Any suggestions would really help.

Re: My heat doesn't work to well.

You can try RockAuto.com, Autozone/Oriellys, or a junk yard. I have a feeling I may be doing this with mine too... Hopefully You don't need to remove the dash. I'm gonna get some sleep, but maybe tomorrow or by Monday I will post back and take a look at ALLDATA for it. And the door your talking about I believe is called a blend door, which moves air into different vents in the car. If its broken it may block the hot air...

Good Luck..

Not yet, I do school in the day, some nights. Some weekends I have little time. Too much snow for washington this time of year too.

Re: My heat doesn't work to well.

My issue is mostly with the air only going through the defrost vents only, but i found a TSB (Technical service bulletin) that says I have a pinched HVAC vacuum hose.

Either way I will still be taking the dash apart. I will probably take pictures of the teardown and post them here, since taking the dash out means you can fix your issue too.

Re: My heat doesn't work to well.

I recently blew out the heater core. I did clear out some gunk however it still didn't fix the issue of not having any heat. I too have check out the blend door and hopefully that will solve the problem

That is the default position ; you have no vac from the engine to the controller
Start by checking the one way valve on the engine before you rip anything apart.
Common for it to break with age

Alright I will, that's a good idea, I believe it's relatively cheap if I do need it replaced anyways.

Re: My heat doesn't work to well.

I have the center console out, so I can figure out the radio wiring, But I'll be putting in speakers from my old car temporarily. I'm doing a few things to the dash/interior with the lights to rewire/clean.

I have a couple pics of the heater control and the cable that is hooked up, but when I get the dash apart a little more I'll get them posted here.
