air box modification
air box modification
I have a '92 Z28 350 with TPI. When I was installing my K&N's a while back, I noticed that the airbox had these funky baffles in them, kind of like a curved platic curl which I would thick restricts the airflow somewhat. I'm guessing they did this so that the intake wouldn't directly suck in any moisture? Any one ever remove these baffles and experience any problems or are they negligible and not worth the effort removing.
As another thought, are there any advantages of going with the K&N open air element mounted on the TB? I would guess that it would be less restrictive but would suck in alot hotter air?
any thoughts?
Thanks

Yeah. Take the baffles out. U are right about the filter on the TB, it wouldn't be good. Unless u have a hood like an SS hood that is open there for air to get right to it and not closed like the stock hood.
92,
Good call - There you guys go, using logic and reason again... When will this madness end?
If you want to get a few more ideas for mods, check near the top of the Tech Article section at the front of the site: https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/
The gutted air box is just one of those modifications done routinely, and most suggested mods have adequate detail to make it fairly clear.
BTW - Welcome Aboard!

BTW, when I remove the baffles, do they just snap out or do I have to cut them out. I haven't had a chance to get in there to look and thought I'd ask since it sounds like this is a common free mod.
Thanks
Thanks
i myself had a 87 MPFI camaro with the same intake as the TPI's i just gutted the intake boxes, " cut off the bottoms" so the air fiters will get max air flow and you will get a great improvment in response & horse power, you can also take it a step further and leave a little bit of the boxes "to where theair slits were" and then get 8 inch air conditioner tubes and make a ram air/ cold air intkae out of it, works great
there is a tech article on making them, you should check it out.
