How much cam can a 406 take ?
How much cam can a 406 take ?
I need to pick a cam for a carburated, trick flow headed 406 with about 10:1 compression. It will have an edelbrock RPM intake and edelbrock 750 carb on it. Would something in the 240/250 (duration) range be too small for a 400 ? I also heard a lot of lift will help the 400 breathe better. Also this will go in a 5 speed car. Something around 530 or so ? Any suggestions ? Thanx
alot dah i think i told you that LMAO. I would say for what you are running and the fact you will spray it once in a while a 248 dur and a 525 or so lift is hella good. I know you want lots of power but you still wanna drive it every day so do not go to big but then again you do need to flash on those stangs. that set up should give you a good 425-450 hp I would guess. plus hella torque those 400s love to make

both comp and cammotion recomended ~238-246
(which is what i was figuring) for my 400. Its intended to pull 6000 hard and start laying down about 6200.
If you use 1.6s and get something in the 236-240 range for intake you normaly end up with about .600 lift (hyd-roller) that should be enough for most 400s.

I don't think he is going to go roller but he does want as many people as poss to reply as soon as poss and please know what you are talking about....... he wants it to pull to about 6 or 6500rpms no higher. also anyone with a 85 camaro knows you can't fit a good carb and intake under the hood of those things he has a 85 z28 he also can use some sugg on an air cleaner other wise we might just take a vortec air intake and modify it to fit with his cold air. Me i will stick to the old easy cheap cars to work on

Try this:
Comp Cams p# 12-250-3 XE 284H-10
dur @.050 240/246 .507/.510" lift
Use a 3500 to 3800 stall converter or a 5 speed and 4.10's
I'd use a Victor JR and 750 DP holley for this motor.
With a good exhaust system you should be in the mid to low 12's
1.6 ratio rockers are an option. just be sure your valve springs will handle the lift. (.540"/.543" @1.6 rocker ratio)
Remember with the 4.10's and in 5th gear (overdrive)
you'll still have a very reasonable cruise speed on the hwy.

well your not going to make 500+hp with a flat tappet
unless your planning on twisting it much more than 6000.
400s need airflow to make torque. You can't get airflow without opening the valves as fast and as much as possible. Especially at reasonable rpm.

on hi perf chevs from the late 60's, early 70's
some people refer to this as the L-88 air cleaner
There is a Weiand Team G intake that has even more clearance
Check out #7546, #7530, #7532
I had the #7546 with the above air cleaner with a 2.5" element on my car with room to spare.

http://www.edelbrock.com
I haven't checked to see if the common aftermarket
dropbase aircleaners sit as low around the carb as the
origional L-88 air cleaner did. (Mine)
I also have a Moroso base, so if/when the snow ever melts
here I'll go out and compare the two on my F-BIRD
A friend here, picked up 3/10's and a few mph by switching
from the RPM intake to the Vic Jr on an very simular motor combo.
I agree the victor is a better intake but with his n20 plate and the rpm intake there's only about 1in from the top of the carb to the hood???? he does have a 92 hood on it maybe thats diff??? when he put's it all back together we will try my air cleaner on it since i have a drop base with a 2in air cleaner and extreme lid hope it will work. thanks for the help anyone with any more cam ideas feel free.
