Ever try to fix something and end up breaking something instead?? Need help.
Okay, today i decided to try and fix the light for my high beam indicator. I thought that maybe the bulb was loose or something. Well I didn't know if the needle for the speedo could come off or not. But i got it off alright, broke it right off
. Now i can't tell how fast i am going . i can kinda guess but i would like to fix it if I can. So my questions do i need to get a whole new little speedo assembly or can i just go get the needle and the pin it presses on to and use that. I mean if i take the assembly apart will that mess it up. If i need a new one do i need one with the 140mph speedo because that is what i have. Does it have to be from an 87 camaro which is what i have or can it be from a firebird. Plus if there is anything else that i should know i would really appreciate it. Also is there a right way to take the needle off or is it like that to prevent tampering . I mean there has to be right or how do people put on white face guages?? Thanks for any help you can give me.

If you only broke the plastice needle and not the metal shaft it sits on, then you can just replace the needle by itself. If you broke the shaft you will have to fix/replace the speedometer unit but not the whole cluster. If you replace the speedometer unit then it will have to be out of a car with the 140mph speedo. To get them off with out breaking them, I pull it off by the circular part and not the needle and just do it very carefully.
By the way, to change the lightbuld you DO NOT need to take the needles off, the bulbs are in the back, and they twist out.

Do you know if i can get that part through gm and would you happen to know how much, Yeah I know the bulbs come out through the back i just don't want to tear the dash half apart to get to it . You can't really get to the back of the cluster without disconneting the speedo cable and i could barely fit my arm back there when i had it torn apart. I really appreciate your post, thanks.

Perhaps you should do a search for the thread "What NOT to do when working on you car". You aren't alone.

I would bet that part is discontinued just like everything else is for the most part
I would go to the local u-pull-it junk yard and just pocket one. Most of the time even if you show it to them, they won't charge you for something that small. As for tearing the dash apart, On mine which is electric there is about 3 trim panels you need to take off, and then the cluster comes out with like six screws. One at each corner, and one in the middle at both the top and bottom of the cluster. It should only take about five minutes to do!
That post was hilarious!! (some of it was unfortunate though

) So are you saying that i don't have to disconnect the speedo cable? I can just unscrew it and disconnect it once the assembly is unscrewed, then connect the cable to the new assembly and screw it back in and then i am done? Just want to be sure before i tear the dash apart. My car is an 87 iroc. when you said your dash was electric did you mean digital?? Mine is not(digital). Anyone know if the speedo assembly can be replaced without tearing the dash apart?? Thanks.
