I'm not sure about the weight of engines. Would a 1/2 ton engine stand be good for small blocks?

Really it depends on the stand. I purcased a 1250 lbs stand and it was a bit shakey for me. i mig welded it where it was bolted together and it made a world of difference. I think the manf. push the truth a bit. If the stand looks and feels cheap it is. Thats may 2 cents.

I don't mess around with cheap stands. I bought a four-wheel stand that is a hell of lot more stable then a three-wheel stand.
This comes true when you start moving the engine around, or even rotating it.
Grade 8 bolts are also the way to go, when attaching it to the engine.
1/2 ton should be enough, even if you bolt up all the accessories.
I also liked what "89blackbird" did, by welding the joints. You could probably even weld some 45-degree gussets to increase its capacity two fold.

Cool, it does make a hell of a difference when the old lady tells you to move the engine out of the kichen
...
It's a different story when she tells me to get the transmission out of the tub !
BTW: I ment 90-degree gussets.
