That's about a buck a quart less than the regular price. For the oil and filter, you can expect about $21.00, or just about the cost of a ten-minute oil change place using regular old mineral oil.

Not highly technical, but I could ramble on for pages about the benefits of synthetic. I thought I'd spare everyone - This time!

 

I have thought about changing over to Mobil 1, but my 1992Z has 56,000 miles on it. I've heard that it can make a vehicle use more oil. I would definately try it if I knew that it would'nt start using more. It has had Pennzoil 10W40 in it since new.What do you think?

 

Both wallmarts here are out of mobil 1 jugs. The one closest to me had the jugs and were selling them cheap $15.98 but the store is under construction and they moved the automotive section to the other side and forgot to move the jugs. I will be on the look out though.

but.. i like it when they have the 6-quart bottles in one box and they are on sale 3.15 per quart.. twice the smart folks at target sold me 12 quarts of M1 for 6dollars and some change.

This isn't Wal Mart's house brand - it's Mobil 1, right in the Mobil 1 package. I wouldn't be too keen on Pennzoil/Quaker State either.

 

Not tech but, the last time I purchased a 5qt jug of M1 at the wallmart on this side of town the cashier swiped the jug across the scanner and it rang up as swisher sweet cigars $1.98. They have to sell it at the price it rings up as, unless its too much.

That's one thing good about working for them, before I left for college I got 10% off, and those jugs were a good deal. Now I'll just get my friend to use his discount card, cause I need some more. Wish I could find a deal like a whole case for the price of one, I'd buy every case they had, including what was in the back, think of all the money you would save. Actually, I might check that out tomorrow.

Costco/Price Club has the Mobil 1 stuff pretty cheap too. I think it was $21, but it was for 6 quarts not the 5 quart jug.

Synthetic works, no question. Only thing I can say bad about it is that most people dont keep their cars long enough to need it.

 

No, I heard it was mainly from you guys, that getting synthetic, will remove gunk (good thing), but also open up leaks and other cr@p I don't want to deal with (bad thing). Synthetic is almost like windex for our paint, its good cuz it takes off the wax (so can rewax bottom up), but its bad cuz it can ruin the paint. I'm stickin with normal oil, don't want any troubles with my car, especially not with the engine.

The reported problems that people were having with synthetics is that they had used cars that have been driven for many tens of thousands of miles on crude oil.
We all know that crude oil causes sludge when its over-heated and causes varnish when its used regularly. The primary problem people were having was oil leaks. The reason is that the superior synthetic oil worked its way thru "false seals" which are caused by sludge and varnish.

Another theory is that the crude oil makes the gaskets/seals swell, then switching to synthetic made them contract back to their original shape.

These problems did happen 15 years ago. Over the years the oil companies have addressed this concern by using additives to keep the seals swollen.

I have changed over to synthetics in every used car I purchase. I have had no problems at all with leaks, etc. My 1988 Corvette went 240,000 miles + on the stock engine and was never taken apart. I sold the car at that point.

Actually, since I've started using Mobil, my car's stopped leaking oil. 90k miles on a horribly kept up engine by the previous owners and not a drop of oil low after more than 3000 miles now. It's still turned black, but.. that says more about my engine than the oil.

Now the only smoke I have to worry about is the gas fumes from my car being wayyy too rich.

Kinda the other way around. Oil (and fuels, for that matter) leach out the plastisizer (the stuff in the polymers that keep them pliable) from the seals, making them stiff, contract, and easy to crack. Petroleum oils don't replace the plastisizers with anything that will keep the seals pliable (although these "high mileage" oils attempt to do that).

Typical synthetic bases will actually swell the seals, so a seal swell retardant is added to counteract that.

The part about cleaning up sludge and varnish is correct, though. I switched the LG4 over to synthetic at 123k miles. I replaced the valve guide seals shortly after that (hard as a rock, cracked). There were no leaks (enough to form a drop, anyway) when I took the engine out for the mods in the sig at 143,600 miles.

 

ok... moving back up a few posts... Is Mobil 1 syn the same as the WalMart house brand? or is WalMart Quacker State?

No it's Mobil 1. It comes in a 5 quart jug for $17.88 rather than a case of 6 one quart bottles for $25.

 

I too have heard that synthetic oil will swell the seals just a little. Of couse, we all know that the cleaning action of synthetic oil will (could) clean up sludge/varnish/etc. which could develop into an oil leak as it could have been sealing what would otherwise have been a source of an oil lead. Hopefully, the swelling action (if it indeed occurs) will compensate for any leaks.

I read this in an article about synthetic oil somewhere a year ago.

For me, I changed to Mobile 1 after ~ 98,000 miles, and now, with 114,000, I have no problems.
