Best way to put cam gear on the crank...
I read I shouldn't use a hammer to put it on. I have before but it always involved a block of wood and tapping.
Maybe this time I should BBQ the cam gear before I install it? Maybe cook the gear and ice down the crank snout?

Astro,
You could heat the sprocket with a bearing heater, then quickly push it in place. There are also installation tools available, but a large (1½) socket, a pulling stud, nuts and washers works pretty well, too. Thread the stud fully into the crank snout. Lightly lube the crank sprocket bore, then start the sprocket straight. Slide the socket over the stud, install a flat washer and nut, and slowly pull the sprocket into place with the nut.
Using a hammer and soft drift will probably not damage the sprocket, and probably can be done safely if you don't get "wicked" with the hammer. However, there is a risk of damaging the thrust bearing surfaces of the crank if the hammer gets a little too "active".

Gloves, they will not absorb heat as quickly so it will stay hotter. Just run it out to the garage real quick and get it on there, as soon as it touches the crank it will cool off very quickly and start shrinking.
