Question about my heat that doesn't work.

My heat isn't working so i was going to open the lower console to look at the (ported vacuum switch??) What does it look like? How does it work?? Does it just apply vacuum to the heater control valve and the valve routes coolant to the heater core. How do i go about fixing the ported vacuum switch if it is broken?? Is it possible the vacuum line to the switch just isn't connected?? If it needs repair does the whole little temperature control cluster need to be replaced or just the switch?? Thanks in advance for any help.

one of the things that usually causes this is the crappy nylon vacuum lines they use harden and break over time... check all teh connections int he engine bay first before you tear the dash apart. If there is no vacuum to the system, the baffles in the dash wont rout the air properly and the valve that routs coolant to the heater core wont work.

You can also bypass the heater valve completely. That's what I did and it def. clears alot of space. Also, you don't feel any head coming through if you have it turned off....in case you were worrying about having heat all the time.

That's fine for you since you have your AC removed. But I wouldn't do it on a car that still has AC that is being used or it'll warm up the air that's supposed to be cold.

thanks for the replies, I'll check all things that you all mentioned. When or if i figure out the problem i will post to let everyone know what it was. Also i am sorry if forgot to mention this before but when i say the heat doesn't work i meant that when i turn the heater fan on the heater fan comes on but it blows cool air on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th postion for fan speed. on the 1st speed it blows out semi warm air. Also when i put the fan on there isn't a vacuum at the heater control valve. At least not as far as i can tell. But interestingly enough when the heater isn't on and it's fairly warm outside there is quite a bit of heat coming from the vents on the side of the lower console. Not sure if this all makes sense, sorry.

Dimented- I am from pemberton which i am sure you know where that is or a least have an idea it's only half an hour down 38 east, but at least until the summer(when the semester is over) i am in glassboro which isn't too far either, any particular reason that you wanted to know?
