How can you tell if your timing chain "slipped" stretched?

I still haven't solved my high RPM miss problem....I even swapped in a new distributor, new plug wires, different carb.....a friend of mine was saying that it could be a slipped timing chain. Come to think of it, back when I swapped my vortecs on my motor (bout a year ago) I used a crappy single row autozone style chain (doh!). how would the motor run with a stretched chain?

If your timing has changes... BINGO. If not its not the chain. did you check your EGR?... thats a high speed miss kinda prob. Does not open/close fully. causes many a probs.

Use a timing light and watching the timing marks jump all over the place is usually a good indication of a stretched chain. A stretched chain will still run since ignition timing can be adjusted but cam timing will be off.

The chain won't slip causing a high rpm miss. If it slips the engine won't run.

Check your fuel system. Change the filter. If you can, install a pressure gauge and observe the fuel pressure at high rpm.

well, you can get some timing fluctuation from a worn dist gear

.
with the valve cover off, turn the harmonic bal backward. How far does it go b4 the valves move.
Thats just a swag way.

no need to remove the valve cover, just pulling the distributor cap is a lot easier. distributor is driven off cam gear, so turn harmonic balancer and observe how long it takes before rotor starts to turn.

Motor has no EGR. Read my sig. Well I replaced the distributor and although the problem "somewhat" went away, it still doesn't pull really hard past 5 grand like it used to......I checked the timing and its right on the money..however it DOES jump around a little, but JUST a little.....anyways the motor is being dissassembled tommorow in preperation for the new race ported vortecs, timing chain, Super Victor intake, and 1.6 RR next week. Funny thing will be when I start the car up again after all the new parts are installed and it still has a high RPM. Then I think I'll just sell the car and buy a Honda!! HAAHAHAHA right..........

slipped chain is easy

it sounds like this
tick tick BOOM

as far as a streched chain can't you find how much play it has?
there are specs for that right?

and as CHD said if your timing is off and you replaced all your ign stuff already and you still have the problem then I think it might be it

though how much work is it to put in a roller system rather then a chain?

are they worth it?
