305 LO3 vs Ford Taurus

this lady at work says she thinks she could beat me
in a race with her 3.0 liter v6 Ford Taurus, I told her shes
got green eggs and ham for a brain!
her taurus is 200 hp, but only 200 torque at 4700 rpm!!!

My car is 230HP with 300 torque @ 3200 rpms

reply with your comments on this so she can see what your
guys honest opinion is without us going out and getting a
speeding ticket on the bypass for me to prove it to her.

Show her your tail lights. Tauri are some slow cars. I was in a friend's '97-or-so Taurus and we got walked away from by an '85-or-so Honda Civic (complete with fart tip, primer, and bondo).

Where do you get 230 hp from a stock 305 TBI?

The LO3 made no where near 230hp bud. I think the Taurus will suprise you.

Those 3.0 tauruses are PIGs. Even the 3.8 taurus is nothing to get excited about. But then again, neither is a TBI 305. You're sporting 170hp, not 230.

Oh, and if by chance she's got an SHO, you're toast.

My $5 is down on the Ford as painful as it may be. I've seen TBI cars get rinsed by GTI's, Type R's, 3.1L Cavaliers..you name it!!

Should have posted this on the Street Racing board. I'd say it'll come down to the driver, but where are you getting 230hp from?

re

Having owned both cars, i would say the camaro will easily win.
The 3.0 is a DOG off the line. The 3.1(also owned) would kick its butt.

k&n open element air cleaner
Accell Wires
Edelbrock TES headers (5-10 HP)
Flowmaster 3 inch 80 series exhaust.. aproximately 15-20 HP increase

and even if that only brings me to equal her in hp, I still have 100 foot pounds of torque on her.. her book says 200 foot pounds of torque....... I know even a 305 V8 has got to put down more feet than that c'mon guys...... were talkin a FORD TAURUS here!! jeeeeeeeez my car isnt that slow even with the stereo in it
I've whipped other TBI camaros on the street.....

Dude, you cannot go adding exhaust, headers etc to HUGE HP results, those are just bolt ups, They will give you a little HP increase, but nothing huge to brag about. The real HP comes from Cams, Head work, etc ( internal work ).. yes you are a little better than stock , but dont think youve gained a true 50HP by those, companies will say you will get all the HP increases in the world, but in all actuality thats not true, you just flow alot better. I owned the ford taurus cars before, and even the base model is quick, but SHO is very fast for a family car. What model is hers? You really need to go out to a back street and race, then it will save us hours of takling about it.. just go race, and post the results, we are excited to hear them :-) GOOD LUCK.. What gears you got in your car?

My buddies '97 Taurus won't even touch my '90 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Let me say that one more time...My buddies '97 Taurus won't even touch my '90 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. THE TAURUS CAN'T HANG WITH AN OLD *** OLDSMOBILE!! Unless it's an SHO (I hear that they're pretty fast, but I don't have any personal experience with 'em) you will wax her ***.

I own a 2000 Sable, basically the same thing as a taurus. Yes they are slow off the line, but.......you'd better stay on it, cuz top end kicks A$$. Those 3.0 duratecs will surprise you with how quick they are.

she probably has the newer taurus which will turn easy low 16's stock and that's roughly what your tbi runs stock. with the few mods you've done you might have a chance against her. the torque doesn't matter that much. your car is heavier by a couple hundred pounds and torque is what gets you off the line, but it's hp that gets you going past the 15mph up mark. my money would be on the ford.

I am just gonna have to race her
and go from there!
I will race and then get back on here..
but first I am gonna have to put some new spark plugs and distributor cap and rotor in my car.. running like **** cuz I didnt drive it all winter.
none of this will matter when I get my ZZ4 Crate motor and a hot cam, ,and maybe a nitrous setup

P.S. she doesnt have the SHO

Good thing it isn't an SHO or you would be kissing her exhaust pipes. Let's just say I know a guy that has minimal mods to his 91 SHO and he ran a 14.8 at Atco Raceway, I was returning from my Run on the return lane and they were towing his car off the track . I even AAA'd his *** 80 something miles back home.
So if you ever race an SHO, remember that they're low 15's with ease.
As for the other taurus', they're junk. I think you can get the tires to smoke if you slam on the brakes from 100mph .
They're dogs and low 16's is pretty nice but I'd say mid 16's at best.

I don't know about the GTI's or Type R's, but my LO3 KILLED a 3.1L cavalier (with SS written on the side ). Of course, my car is not "completly" stock, but i only have a cam, exhaust, headers, and k&N.

Oh g0d.

I knew that as soon as the word taurus was mentioned Jon would come out of the woodwork. You're a good moderator, but you're bad at picking dream cars. It's a TAURUS. As in FAMILY CAR. 4 doors, anyone? Not me. I'm not trying to forget that I'm 20, riding around in a car that'll impress no one except my dad.
As for your 14.8 riding buddy, I was at Atco, and saw it happen. It's pretty hard to run 14.8 when you can only get 10 feet out of the hole before "BAM." After it happened, the announcer cheerily said: "Keep in mind folks, it's a FORD" while the car was getting towed off of the lane. :P

It's sad that we're even having this debate. We're discussing a race between a V8 Camaro and a taurus.

Somebody should smack GM for offering so many V8 options in thirdgens. Ford got it right: 4 banger or a fast V8.

Flame mode (just for fun ), but where did I pick the Taurus as a dream car? Can't remember ever saying that...only that compared to ANY other 4 door sedan I would get an SHO before anything GM has made (Impala SS 94-96 excluded).
Now about the breaking the half-shaft...wow, big deal, you ever heard a 10 bolt rear grenade? Heck, a half shaft is a LOT cheaper than blowing up our rears! If you're curious, he actually just had that half-shaft replaced (not from breaking).
Tell me you wouldn't be caught dead driving an Impala SS and I'll reach through the monitor and slap you upside the head. It's just GMs version of the SHO...the other companies sports sedan. Oh yeah, and how many 5 speed Impala's are there....hahaha.
I'm not a fan of Ford but I'm even less a fan of imports (European excluded) so if you had to make me choose loyalties I would just tell you Domestic.
Now a dream car list looks more like: ZR1 vette, COPO 1st gen maro, M5, Lotus esprit v8, and everything else I want is custom in my head.
Seriously though, you can not just say a 4 door sports sedan is crap because I'd rather have one over a crappy SUV anyday!

I own a 94 SHO and a 88 RS Camaro. They are both bone stock and in great condition. Let me contrast between the two:

Acceleration: SHO
Top Speed: SHO
Comfort: SHO
Handeling: SHO
Reilability: Camaro
Modification Availabiltiy: Camaro
Mods that work: Camaro
Cheaper to repair: Camaro
East of finding parts: Camaro
Easer to work on: Camaro

The thing about the SHO is its all Ford except the engine. The Yamaha is a wonderful piece of engineering. Although, all the troubles I have with the car is all non-engine related.

This is the first Ford I have owned. I will never buy another!

Chris

I wouldn't race, after all what do you have to gain ?, "Hey guys I beat a v-6 Taurus", now if you lose, that would be embarrasing. There are some things you should leave alone, like if a girl slaps you would you beat her up for it? I would look her in the eye and say you know what your Taurus can beat my car, then start laughing my *** off.

Come on now guys, this is thirdgen.org right not SHOjunk.com, The taurus is going to lose. Everyone say it with me THE FORD WILL LOSE. Plus it's got a lot to do with if you think you can win the race, just say I am going to wax you and do it.
Plus take off the air filter and let some air out of the rear tires when you race. Not sure if you said but if got a stick you should be able to take her.
I beat a new '99 SHO with my H.O. 305 '84 Z with a Holley 650 cfm and Headers. So just stick it to her.
Good Luck

i would have to say that the fastest 4 door sedan i have been is a Pontiac Gran Prix GTP. A supercharger stock does wonders for 4 door family car sales. if the wife wont let you have a sports car, get the GTP. extremely comfortable with HUD system nice stereo and of course around 215-240 supercharged ponies. Not bad for a family ride.

I'm going to agree with you. I had one of those get up and walk away from me straight out of the hole. I never stood a chance. My car was a low-15 second car at the time, so those GTPs are good for mid-14's I would guess.

I beat a new '99 SHO with my H.O. 305 '84 Z with a Holley 650 cfm and Headers.

i was not aware that ford brought back the sho. they dropped the sho when they went to the new body style. sorry to do this but dont give me none of your horse$h!t!, dont take that harshly i just love that line in adam sandler's cow skit on his cd. but yeah i love fords and i love chevys. i personally dont know why people can say they hate ford or chevy. they never hurt anyone. but anyway i love my maro and i love my torino. i would never let either go.

The Ford Contour SVT sedan is a pretty quick car for a sedan. I've seen a few of those around lately.

Yup, a 305 TBI makes 170hp and 255 lb/ft of torque. These engines do have kick-in-the-butt acceleration for 170hp engines.
I love the way it acceleretes on freeways. A lot of cars can't do that. The Taurus is a heavy car, I think you'll win.

Hey........

Well I didn't racec her.. but my
friend who has a TPI camaro Z28 305
racedd a ford taurus with the SHO
and uhhhhhhhhh.... well .........

he lost...... he said he thinks Id have
no prob takin hers tho judgin the kind of race he had with the SHO.. However... I think Im gonna just take the advice of one of the replies..
whats the point.... so what if I won.. why even race her....... so I can say I beat a ford taurus family sedan?? naw.. screw it.. it doesnt earn braggin rights anyway even if I won.. me and my bud were talkin bout it and we were talkin bout how a lot of the new cars are just fast even cars that shouldnt technically be fast..... Minivans, family sedans, SUV's, ,trucks) etc.. anyways..... I would rather just not waste my time.. I think I could beat her, but it's not something that brings excitement like beating another muscle car or sports car..
Ill just keep saving my money for my ZZ4 and just enjoy my ride.. the bottom line is..... even if her car was faster... mine looks ten million times cooler, ,sounds ten million times cooler, ,and is a funner car to drive regardless.....tarus cars are ugly shaped family sedan ford junk.... fast or not!!!

Car: 1991 Formula
Engine: 350 firebreathing inches of Small Block Chevrolet
Transmission: A 700R4 that has trouble handling the formentioned 350.
Spartyon,
Don't take this the wrong way but, The '99 Taurus was available with a SHO package with a 3.4L V-8. Also I never said I hated fords, I own a 1967 Mustang and it is a great car!!! Just thought I had to defend the whole no SHO in 1999 comment.
