ok so i got a freind with a late 80's mustang. its a 5.0 with a stick. Its a convertible. I know the regular mustangs are faster than my 305tpi but convertibles weigh alot more right so do i have a chance? Im stock.
I'd say he's at low 15s. So I think it'll be a driver's race.
Member
You didn't say if you're auto or standard. If you have an auto and he can actually shift, you might have trouble, but if you're both stick it'll be real close. Practice your launches and use your jump off the line to stay ahead. Also, is his car modded at all? Good luck man.
Supreme Member
Yea with those stangs you never know. Those things react very well with the mods so if he is modded he might have you.
im auto and hes all stock i think his car is outa tune and mine is well tuned. I thought it would be close. I dont think he knows what hes doing and im pretty familiar with my car.
Member
If his cars out of tune and he can't shift, you'll take him, auto or not. Just make sure it doesn't miraculously get in tune and aquire new heads or something before the race
, cause they really do wake up with a few mods. Let us know how it turns out.

5-speed cars are really hard to call. I've seen people turn 13 second 5.0's into 15 second 5.0's simply because they couldn't drive for ****. Don't overlook the convertibles though, I had an AOD 'vert running 14.20's on a 100% bone stock motor from the paper air filter to the oil pan at one point.

depends on how late 80's? - the seemed to get a breath of life in 89. They definitely respond well to mods, and their are more bolt-on motor mods out there for them than our f-bodys. - I think it'll come down to a driver's race.
-mustangs need parts to go fast, GM's are fast stock...

The '87 - '88 5.0's were the fastest from the factory of all the 5.0's. Hot Rod actually recorded a 14.17 in a stock LX in '87.the seemed to get a breath of life in 89

hey Nic, didnt that convertible of yours have gears, a TC, and some suspention mods? the motor may have been stock, but the rest wasnt. the way you say "bone stock" it sounds like you bought some 80,000 mile Stang, drove it right to the track, and clocked off some low 14 sec passes. that scared the crap outta me until i read in another post you had drivetrain mods. imagine if a completely stock vert ran low 14s, what a hatchback would run! made me think twice about racing Mustangs for awhile
Supreme Member
If you really want to get scared look at Bob Cosbys Mustangs, his Cobra now is sick, and his LX, when it was near stock was also sick!!!

I've never said anything about the rest of the car being stock:the way you say "bone stock" it sounds like you bought some 80,000 mile Stang, drove it right to the track, and clocked off some low 14 sec passes.

I have only $800 or so in mods..and ran time in my sig... with wheelspin still. My car is as heavy as a stock GT vert..I have a 150lb+ stereo... Stock though..I would say low 15's with stick...all depends...

Are GT 5.0 coupes faster or lighter than LX 5.0 coupes? From this board it sounds like LX's are faster and I guess I just sort of figured GT=performance oriented, LX=luxury-oriented, any of you Mustang guys know? Thanks
Supreme Member
GTs and LX 5.0s are identical in engine, drivetrain, and handeling, the GTs only have skirts, more power equipment and weigh more. The LXs are usually faster by a few tenths. There were never any GT coupes and the LX coupes were the fastest by far!

More like
GT = Grand Touring (flashy GFX and fog lights meant to show off)
LX = Less eXtras (Less standard options and GFX to go fast)
The early GT's were way more luxurious than LX's. At the end of the 3rd gen run, LX's and GT's had the same plush interiors (except the 4-bangers) so the only diff was the pretty little skirts

I know that my car has GT seats (from the factory) and every factory power option minus power seats! I thought this was unusual until I started going to Mustang shows and almost all of the LXs had power everything. So basically most GTs are just for looks!!
Supreme Member
Yea, towards the end of the fox body model run, the LX's started coming with just as many options as the GT's. My convertible had power everything...even power lumbar support

Senior Member
Not mine
Got the cheesy taxi-cab cloth front and rear seats with no power lumber. Also was missing the dummy light cluster with the low fuel, low coolant, low washer fluid and low oil dummy lights. The good seats don't come on my year LX and the dummy lights are 87-89 GT only. Other than those two things and the obvious GT GFX and fog lights, i have all the other options including the moon roof. Actually, the only factory available option my car didn't come with was cruise control
GT's just got more standard options than LX's. For example, tilt wheel was standard on GT's...but optional on LX's
But you can add them if you want. I added later model GT seats with power. Also, that dummy gauge is easy to add. I now have the low fuel and oil lights but don't feel like ripping off my fender to install the low washer fluid lights. I also don't have the low coolant light but that it because i use an aftermarket catch bottle with my 3-core rad/SN95 electric fan setup.

Well, consider me enlightened.
I like the looks of those thirdgen Mustangs, and would even consider buying one, but I have to get my camaro first.....haha and then find a way to pay for it all.

ive got a 90 supercoupe and its upwards of 3700 lbs and man that thing would run right beside, if not faster than my well modded 82 camaro and it only has a 6 cylinder (3.8) 5 speed, dont underestimate those cars, i have yet to be beat by a 5.0 in that car, chevy (also 5.7) or ford, it has independent rear suspension, electronic ride control, posi, etc. and not only is it fast 0-60 but it has a top end of 140+ power everything, the seats have the side things that inflate that hold you in the seat. i must say thats one bad car, and nobody knows what it is, such a sleeper
Supreme Member
The funny thing is I recently lost the factory seats to make way for 2001 Charcol (sp?) Leather seats!!! They are so much more comfortable and look nicer with the embroidered pony!! The only downsides are that you sit a little higher and I lost the use of power lumbar!! Other than that they are perfect!
DakotaSLT, it's nice to see more people like me who don't favor one company, I like both Chevy and Ford, and even Dodge! I do prefere the Mustangs, but only because of the money issues and some styling preferances! I see you don't even have 20 posts, so welcome aboard!
Camaro03, that Supercoupe sounds nice, I have always liked T-birds and especially the Scoupes and the V8s!! I was thinking about maybe getting one after I sort out my Mustang!!!
Man I'm starting to disslike my car!!!!

For a whole 3 days...I went for a few end over end flips with it..
Only had 61,000 miles on it...
That sucked..the back hit 1st though..then did a back flip onto the front pass side. Have to scan before pics in!! It had the FMS intercooler on it also since they did not receive and intercooler till 87. It went decent..but was auto.

What'd you end up doing with the car Chevy eater? Do you still have it? I'll take it off your hands if you do and don't want it anymore

A freind of mine has an 87(?) turbo coupe. He is going to leave to join the Air Force at the end of summer, and I keep telling him he needs to leave me to baby sit his car
It's bone stock right now though and I think its in need of a tune up, because my Grand Am kills it every time. But if he let me "borrow" it while he was in basic, I could have some fun with it :hail: BOOST

I desperately want a TC motor to drop into my 4 banger! 250 hp from junk yard mods =

Senior Member
Ya..I still have it. Sell the whole car..motor...don't matter to me. I traded it for a paint job for my 89LX 5.0 so it is now my fathers. He has done nothing with it though. I wanted to toss it in a LX coupe but don't have time or $$ too. It has 35lb injectors stock and low boost..not sure how much. Lot of potential.
Senior Member
It also has the quad shock traction-lok 7.5 rear with 3.45 gears. The newer Turbo Coupes(87-88) have 3.55's(5spd) or 3.73's (AOD) and a 8.8 with disks.

Yeah I feel the same way. If I like a car, its because of what it can do, not because of whose name is on the rear bumper. I like Camaros and Mustangs (that blue/silver two-tone on a Foxbody GT is sweet!) both, but a black 350 IROC-Z is still my favorite..Originally posted by 5.0mustang

But on the flip side of that is those people who buy a car only for the nameplate
, like a BMW SUV, WTF??? When will you ever take it off-roading? There's no truck potential in that, it's just a status symbol with a $60000 hood ornament. I'll take an american muscle car over that any day.Member
i raced against my uncles 5.0 lx 90 25th anniversary, headers, flowmasters dual exhaust, 3:55s, 5 spd, k and n, with m supercoupe, exhaust work, and a kand n, 5 spd and 2:73 they were perfectly matched, neither one could leave the other 0-100

I know a guy with a white VERT and 5spd and his thing gets up and moves. By far not stock but some of the 305s have from 190hp-220hp. I think ur the 190hp, and if you are you better hope he rips up first and misses 2nd cuz all that extra weight he IS pulling is gonna help his launch. Altho my buddies 89 Formula 350 G92 has gotten me off the line when he had brand new tires and i had BALD tires. Gonna depend on how well ur buddy can drive stick, but if he can drive atleast decent expect a 1-2 car length loss.
