96 Cobra Vs 89 Vette & 2000 Z
this kid who lives by me just got a 96' Cobra 5speed and thinks it is the sh*t. he claimed to be able to easily beat my Vette and my friends stock 2000 Z 6speed convertible. i know we would beat him, but by how much? i forget what these things run, what do you think a overzealous 17 year old kid with a 5speed would do? PS- i dont want to hear how fast they can go with 4.10s and the like, this car is bone stock and is likely to stay that way.

Why are you asking on here? Just go out and whoop his as*! Like you said he's a 17 year old kid who just got a stang! It doesn't get much easier than that. (Not flaming, just saying.)

I've heard of Cobras of those years running low-mid 14s. Of course I'm sure that isn't with the best driver, but I wouldn't worry.

my guess would be a 14 at best. I walked a 94-96ish cobra 5 speed when all my IROC had was a catback and K&N's way back in the day. Then again wheelspin did have a little bit to do with his losing but hey it's not my fault he couldn't drive.

tpivette,
Your car and mine should be running fairly similar times. I have raced a 96 cobra and a 97 cobra. The '96 was driven by a rookie and was bone stock. I pulled at least 10 lengths on him due to a botched launch.
The 97 was more of a race, but then again he had an off road h-pipe, exhaust, 4.30 gears
, and drag radials. But I still won by at least 4 lengths.
I guess under perfect conditions these cars can be fast...but the problem is that their motor makes no torque until around 5000rpm. The '97 was driven by a friend of mine, and he also had trouble launching. It would bog almost every time (even with 4.30's).
Line em up and I think you've got the cobra beat...as long as your car hasnt gotten any slower than 13.6

Cobras are tricky cars to launch and drive right. A rookie will make this car run mid-14's easily.
Friend of mine has a '97 Cobra. I raced him in my car and beat him by 3-4 lenghts. Then we switched cars and he drove mine and i drove his and beat him by 4-5 lenghts going the other way.
The faster car doesn't necessarily win in a street race.
FYI, i have seen 96-98 Cobra running 13's stock...but these were driven by expeirenced enthusiasts and not teenagers in daddy's car

ok, i talked to the guy who sold the kid the Cobra. apparently the previous owner modded it some. it has a cold air intake with a larger MAF, some kind of exhaust (dont know if its cat back or what), and 3.73 gears. i know this kinda puts a hurting on my chances of winning, but if anything is on my side its his lack of driving skills. the salesman told me when the kid left the lot in the car, he grinded 2nd badly. if he cant even shift right under normal driving conditions, how can he do it under WOT? the only thing that worrys me is the gears. i always thought you needed to go to 4.10s or higher in the DOHC Cobras for the best results, but im not sure. what do you think hell do with this combo? im trying to get him to go to the track this Fri to see whos faster, hes just talking way to much trash... oh yeah, what do you guys think a stock 2000 convertible 6speed Z28 with new Futura tires and a hurst shifter will run provided he gets a good launch and nails all his shifts? its gonna be either that car or me racing the Cobra
Cobras come stock with 3.27's. 3.73's are a nice improvement, but the guy shoulda gone with at LEAST 4.10's. If it was my car, i'd do some 4.56's! They just love to rev!
The Mass Air meter and cold air might give it a bit of power. Mustangs respond well to bigger meters.
With a GOOD driver, that car SHOULD be in the 13's with traction. But if he is grinding then i doubt he is good. He need to run that car up to 6500 and shift...but i garantee you he will shift at like 5000 or so and hurt his times. Every Cobra owner i know is afraid to go over 5500RPM! WTF! Redline is 6800! USE IT! it makes a difference.
Cobras can run. Take a look at the mod list of Bob Cosby (head of www.corral.net) '99 CObra. Keep in mind this is a '99...supposedly the worst year

Bob hangs out all the time @ LS1tech.com (he used to own a LS1 car). He's a cool guy and will gladly tell it how it is. Just dont go that there are any other cars out there like his.

I think on a 01+ cobra people with just 4.56 gears and a catback should be going 12's if they're good drivers and can launch.
Ya, but Bob is an awesome driver, look at his LX, there is no way he gets two wringers from the factory! The best mods for the Cobra are 4.56s and a live rear axle. That should go mid 12s. And then its bolt-ons into the 11s!

i didnt have time to see if you have any mods on the vette, but a guy i know ran his 85 vette at the track, it has about 25k on the odo so its still in good shape. He got a 13.9 in it on street tires nd the car is 100% stock, since they made a lot of changes like aluminum heads and a stroger cam i think you can pull better times. Stock that is, i dunno what you have done to it. I'd say your in good hands. Later guys gotta go to work

Monkie, keep your BS in your own posts. im trying to get a legitimate response from the REAL members of this board. why is it that you never have anything constructive to add to the discussions here? and when are the moderators going to realize this and ban you?
Well put tpivette
I think youve got the mustang...and hope the LS1 botches his/her launch. I'd say if its a 6 speed car you have more of a chance of winning, due to traction off the line.
Run em and tell us how it went!

Let me make this simple...
Stay out of our posts!!!
You posting = thread being locked. Its not a coincidence that every thread you have posted on goes off topic and gets out of hand. So do us a favor and keep shut unless you have something to say THAT RELATES TO THE POST

Ignoring M*NK*E, (except for the fact that he "GOT" a Cobra, meaning he did NOT buy it himself!) I think the Mustang will see tailights and the LS1 will be a good run! Go have fun when you race!
