Encounter with a green Firebird

I was in my old beat-up Mustang in Duluth, MN on Saturday. It's got a few mods which include mildly ported stock heads, long tube headers, Cobra intake, Kenne-Bell Mk II cam, 3.73 gears and exhaust. With those mods I've beaten LS1 F-bodies and my own '87 Grand National with 19psi, chip and downpipe. The Mustang pulls hard in the high RPM range all the way to redline and beyond.

So I was going in the same direction as this 3rd gen green Firebird. Other than the cowl hood and the loud, deep engine rumble, it was a real sleeper. Certainly didn't sound like the stock 305 to me. It idled smooth, so I'm guessing he didn't have a real big cam.

I eventually got a light with him. We both take off normally and I hold it in first gear waiting for him to hit it. I was a half car length ahead when he hit it, so I mashed the gas and the rear tires spun briefly.

He pulled even with me and I went through first, second and third before letting off. He was right there and maybe picked up a couple more feet sometime during the run.

I gave him a thumbs up and we went our separate ways.

Geez, for him to keep up with the setup that stang has, he must have done some work to that car.

I was hoping that either he or somebody that knows him would have been on this site so I could find out. I'd sure hate to find out I got beat by a stock 305 with just exhaust!

it was probably a kid with like an LT1 or something. Nice race. I wish i could have seen it. I'd take either of your cars anyday too, as in own them. If your stang can beat the GN, maybe the kid had a 383 or 406? It definately was not a 305. Maybe a realy modded L98 but in no way a "305 with just exhaust"

Not unless he swapped the lt1 in, its a thirdgen firebird (plus LT1's aren't that fast). I'd believe a stroker or poweradder or something like that over an lt1. Lyonsd, you planning on tweaking that GN to beat the Mustang?

that's what i meant, a thirdgen w/an LT1 swapped in. I actually know several people who have done this. One of them lives in my town and his is stroked to 383cu and runs 12 flat w/ a few other mods (gears, cam, heads, exhaust, etc)

Ok, now we're on the same page . I missed the fact that it was a thirdgen the first time I read it, so i thought you maybe did the same. Haha no worries. Yeah the lt1 swap is nice, I just don't know if i would do that over say a zz4 and then leave a TPI intake uptop for a sleeper look.

That stang runs pretty good for being old and beat up. So what times does each of your car run? I'm guessing mid to high 12s if your beating LS1s. What are you plans for the GN? I know with very little work they can be extremely fast.
