13.2 second 305?
13.2 second 305?
About a month ago I was going down to my g/f's work in my stepdad's restored 79 Z28 when I park right next to a guy in a black 92 Z28/ with t-tops, just like mine! Except mine's a v6 RS, LOL. Anyways, he looks over and says "what year is that Z?" I tell him it's a 79 and he says he used to have the same exact car, special perfomance package and everything. Anyways he goes on about his 92 Z, and I ask him if he had a 350 or 305 (even though I knew he most likely had a 305), and he goes "305 actually", and goes on to list his mods. From what I remember he had:
a chip (didn't say brand)
headers into exiting 2.5's
brand new tires
K@N
If I recall that is about it, he didn't mention NOS or any super/turbo, so I'm assuming he didn't have any, although I'm not sure about the juice. Anyways, he says he took it to the track a week ago and ran a best of 13.2. At first I totally believed him, the guy was in his late 30's and he looked like he was a really big camaro fan, and this 92 Z was in absolutely pristine condition, it had EVERYTHING! Hood louvers, 92 Z wheels, fogs, tinted windows, excellent paint job, it looked like he took very good care of it. Anyways, right after he left, still in shock I seen such a beautiful Z (RARELY see one around here), the 13.2 stood out to me. Is he BS'ing? Can a 305 w/o juice run that? Sorry this is so long, I just want to know what you guys think?

i know a 305 tpi that goes 12 flat (willie) but that has an ATI procharger with an intercooler. you can get a 305 to run 13.2, but you would have to have extremely extensive mods, more than just exhaust, heads and a cam....

Actually yes, they should be able to. Over on the TBI board, we have someone running 14.2 and he's not that heavily modded....and that's a TBI, I would think that a TPI should be able to do that.

I think the laughing is unnecessary. I don't think that is, imo. He hasn't touched the cam, and compared to what I see on this board with some people, he's no where close to being heavily modified. He's not stripping out interiors, or deleting all the smog stuff and a/c. He hasn't bored anything, and he's not throwing big *** slicks on it....so no, imo, he's not heavily modified. And remember, that's a TBI (regardless of what people think around here), and the original post was about a TPI....so then, I definately think a 305 TPI should be able to hit 13.2 n/a.

But I can't say much my car has way more mods than that and is running worse.

why coundlt a 305 hit low 13's with out the spray....the ls1 cars are heavier and it takes them 320 horse and 335 ft pounds to hit a low 13...i dont see if u didnt have a 305 puttin the same power down wouldnt hit low 13's....heads a cam exhaust and some intake work will put down that power...
im puttin a cam in porting my heads and doin some intake work...and youll see my low 13 slip when i get it lol

if anyone reads chevy high performance they are doing a feature called "my gen camaro"
right now they have a 87 305 IROC with about $6000 worth of stuff on it to include a shot of NOS and they are running low 13s (with the juice)
they have been working on this car for about a year and a half and come out with a article on it every 3-4 months.

torque is torque right?...400 ft pound is 400 ft pounds regaurdless if it comes from a 305 or a 350...yea i know the 350 will make more higher in the rpm band....but having it down low doesnt hurt either...ls1s have 335 ft pounds at 4000 the tpi makes its peak@3200...make that 400 ft pounds @3400 and the have the high end horse to pull it through the traps....i gaurantee you that will be low 13's...
305 tpi
ported 081 castings
healthy cam
lt1 intake headers
and all the little stuff....
i bet youll be looing at 360+ horse and 380-400 ft pounds..
yea so it will be a 305 does that mean it cant pull the number becuase its a smaller motor...
the timing clocks dont know whats under the hood...

no ones arguing the fact that a 305 cant run low 13's. were just saying its very unlikely the guy in the z was hitting 13's... i mean, when was the last time you saw a 305 in the lows 13's N/A? its really rare.... a lot of gyus will ditch the 305 and get a 350 because it would be more economical to have a 350 to work with....
ps. i do hope to be in the 13's one day wth the Lg4!

Can a 305 hit low 13's without HEAVY mods?? Nope, no frick'n way. I know of only ONE 305 that runs in the 13's N/A but this guy has a ton of mods and he is a track pro that has slicks/ front runners/gutted interior and all the goodies. I'm talking about Tim Burgess of course. I personally saw him run like a 13.2 corrected with a 305, but I know he's got major mods including cam, extensively ported heads, rockers, intake, track exhaust, gears, 5 speed, huge *** slicks, front runners, gutted interior, ect. Its still damn impressive he's running low 13's with a 305 even if he does have an *** load of mods though. I got my girlfriends 305 camaro to go nearly high 13's, it was like 1 tenth away (14.1) and that was with a 2.5 60 ft, so I'm sure I could have gotten it to go 13.7 or so, but I didn't waste my time and dropped a 350 in real quick, then of course, she wrecked the car a few weeks back, and we are back to square one with her new car.....an 85 305 trans am

oh and for mark i saw a show with a viper vs a Zo6 and the Zo6 ran a 12.8 1/4 while the viper ran a low 12.

Was it a 5-speed LB9? Did he have a rebuilt tranny or a 3.73 rear? If he had 3.73s, a 5-speed, and cam, headers, etc. he would be able to get into the 13s. not sure about a 13.2, but I could see a 13.7-13.8 easy. 3.73s are insane, even on a little 305
