Should I have won?

Hey guys,
A few weeks ago I raced a guy in about an '86 IROC with an automatic and I'm assuming a 305. I've got a 91 rs tbi w/ a 5speed and only an open element air cleaner on there. Now I started late off the line cause I didnt know he was going to race so I started with him about a car length ahead of me, but then every shift I made I gained on him and the shift into 3rd gear my car jumped out about a car in front of him. I'm just curious what stock IROC's run and if you guys think it was just my gearing that won the race?

simply put no. but if his care was out of tune or he wasn't fully racing then sure. but no way a tbi convert(heavier) should be able to out run a TPI, but your 5spd might have helped but i still think he should have won

Yeah that's what I was thinking, I'm guessin maybe something was wrong with his car, because he was full out racing he spun the wheels off the line though whereas I stuck. I thought it was pretty funny though, cause I had a girl in the car and he was looking over like a tough guy then I tore him a new one and at the next light he turned right.

I own an '86 IROC....there are 3 different engines for the IROC of this year- LG4, L69, LB9....L69 (HO) & LB9 (TPI) being the better engines. L69 IROCs came with better gearing, not to mention a 5 speed option. LB9 IROCs had more torque, made peak power sooner, and had the benefit of the steep first gear of the 700R4.
To put it short, your 3.42's help off the line & through midrange, providing he doesn't have the G92 option (3.42 also)...but I don't think your TBI 5sp RS is capable of putting up a good fight against an LB9 or L69 IROC...then again, on the street, driver's leave lots of room for errors....so a fast car does not good, if the driver can't drive....

That's a high probability since it's 16 years old and no one takes care of 3rd gen's.....or had the POS LG4...

ok, thanks for the input guys, I wasn't even thinking about the LG4 back in '86. I wasn't thinking they put them in IROC's but thanks for the input.
