03 Cobra...

I was out with my buddy tonight in his 85 ta, its just got a little small block , hes making about 450hp, we were coming back to my house when this 03 cobra comes flying up behind us, he flew by us then practically slammed on his brakes and waited for us..got to the stop sign and took off at the same time, through first we were dead even, 2nd gear we started to pull just lil bit, then hit third and got about a car on him. the top of 3rd in his ta is 108mph just to give you an idea. it was a hell of a race and gotta give props to them damn cobras, he said he had exhaust and that was it so far, but he had already ordered his pully and it was supposed to be here next week sometime, Im glad he didnt have the pulley or it probably would have been the other way around. the specs on the ta are: 350 .030 over (355) forged internals, scat crank, h beam rods, 59-something lift cam, canfield aluminum heads, victor jr intake and holley 750, going through a super t10 4spd tranny and not so good street tires. has 3.23 gears too.

Sounds like your friend has a mid 12 second car there. If he had the pulley it would have been the other way around but still a nice kill.

yea I think until my buddy gets his lil 150 shot of N20 that he's gonna leave the cobra alone once he gets the pulley...lol its not fair, chip, pulley, exhaust and slicks and the damn things are in the 11s.

Gotta hand it to 'em, they're pretty damn fast. Watched one run 12.03 on slicks last Friday...whistling while it worked.

Those cars are definately underrated. A kid who just joined our club had his dynoed stock and put down

375.83 rwhp
363.98 rwtq

Without touching a thing. That is well over 400 hp and torque to the flywheel! Not too bad if you ask me.

nope, it aint too bad at all. But if you really think about it, its kinda sad considering it has a supercharger. There are plenty of LS1's out there with just a cam change putting down those #s. Imagine what they could put down with a blower. Oh well, gotta run what ya brung.

you can always say well if this had that or if that ls1 had a supercharger etc..the fact is..does it really matter how they get the power? thats a hell of a lot of power for a stock car, with just some minor work they are in the 11s, not to shabby if you ask me..I would prefer an ls1 too, but you gotta give credit where credit is due.

Yes, true 25thrss, but if you bolt on a blower to an 01 Cobra it will put out larger numbers too. Another thing to consider is that the 03 motor can handle the boost well over 500 rwhp and even some have seen over 600 rwhp, whereas I have seen many LS1s lose their lunch at 450 rwhp. I am not doubting the LS1 but we are talkin factory motor verse factory motor, and Ford just happened to put on a blower from the factory!

Yeah i agree, thats why i said you gotta run what ya brung and if they bring a supercharger its fair to me. All that means is I better mod a little although I don't think after I finish installing my mods on my LS1 that I will have any trouble whooping up on a modded cobra, let a lone a stock one. Oh, and about LS1 "losing their lunch" after 450 hp, i dont know what you are talking about. Many of them are putting down #'s bigger than that and are just fine. I just got done reading an article in GMHTP today about an LS1 putting down 699 rwhp with a blower on 20 lbs of boost and that was all at 4200 rpm because the fuel pressure would drop off after that. I would love to see what it puts down after they work out the fuel problems.

Well my friends LS1 was done after 430 rwhp with a Procharger. I have never seen an LS1 on a stock bottem dyno at over 450 rwhp! On the other hand I just watched an 03 Cobra with a pulley and exhaust do 450 rwhp about 5 hours ago!

430 maybe if everything else was stock. All you gotta do is go over to LS1.com or LS1tech.com and you will see what kind of #'s these guys are putting down. When i finish installing all of my mods I just bought I should be putting down over 430 rwhp and that is without a blower or nitrous. All motor baby!

Seen a yellow one run tonight. 12.0's at 120mph(didn't even sound like an exhaust). Although I ran like crap(need a lot more time retuning) he ran quite well for street tires.

I think the biggest arguement is that the cost per hp for each brand is quite differen't. The ls1 is comparitively cheap v/s the Ford. The Ford's internals aren't made by Ford(wonder why). Still a great car(not my cup of tea though).

I'll still take my low buck Buick for now. Cheap, available(not so plentiful anymore though) and makes gobs of tourqe.......................

MotorTrend

Not Sure if you guys have seen the new Motor Trend, but the 03 Vette (not Z06) is a hair faster than the Cobra. (13.02 to 13.12) Same size rubber too.

Look at the weight difference of the two cars. The Cobra weighs 500lbs more than the Vette. That pretty much negates the Cobra's horsepower advantage. Oh, and these are 'verts that Motor Trend was comparing not coupes.

There were a bunch at the track yesterday.

The slowest went 13.6 at 109, and the fastest went 12.4 at 116. Dont know the 12.4 cars mods, but saw the fastest stock one go 13.0 at 110 against a 12.8 one with just exhaust. Most of them had big traction issues and none had anything but street radials.

There were some nice Vettes too, in the 11s and 12s, but I had no clue on any of the mods.

GOOD KILL MAN

adding to that, in an issue of C&D or Motor Trend, they raced a 03 cobra vert vs a 03 C5 vert.. not a Z06... and both cars ran about the same time with the c5 coming out ahead over the cobra. both cars ran the same trap speed. i have the mag around here somewhere... ill find it later.. '03 cobras are fast... but not fast enuff!!! hahah!

This is the same mag that pulled a 13.9 out of an LS1 and a 15.0 out of a new GT. They also pulled a 14.9 out of an RSX! Some cars they test fast, some they test slow. I usually wont use their info for anything even a comparison.

The guy I work for has an 03 Cobra that I have driven. It's a convertible and the thing I was disappointed in was the cowl shake. Power was great, handling is good, but that damn cowl shake is annoying. I also don't like Mustang's upright seating position or long shifter reach. Corvettes are much more comfortable, rigid and better looking in my biased opinion. I have driven regular vettes, Z06s and now a Cobra and The Z06s feel faster by the seat of the pants. Good kill by the way

the article also talked about that. They took a sneek shot at american cars by saying that all the european imports dont have the cowl shake at all and that leaves the american verts way behind

and 91305z, i didnt even read you post.. i have the article in front of me.. oh well. Looks like the GTO is just gunna have to rule stang a$$. Hows that gunna feel? a warmed over grand prix is gunna be beating down on cobras. Just wish they were made here to lower the price. Do you know how cheap they would be? Hot Rod said that if they brought the Ute SS aka El Camino here, it would cost $17k with a 6spd LS1!!!!! thats a dam civic!! GM dont know what its got.

The "warmed over grand prix" is really not a grand prix at all. It's rear drive with an LS1 and an independent rear suspension. Expect it to be be in the mid 30s for money. I think they are only bringing 18000 GTOs over so expect dealers to mark up the price. Sucks huh?

Trust me, i read up on the new GTO, but its still looks like a warmed over grand prix!! Its gunna be a hot car, but it wont have the looks. Just hope that SLP adds some flavor to the car with a cool hood and DUAL exhaust
