It was a nice out out today, so I go out cruisin. I pull up next to this red Talon TSI at a light. It looks stock, but I can hear that the turbo is not quite stock. I thought, "I'll let him make the first move". So the light turns and he paces me to about 25 MPH when he puts the hammer down, I drop it down into 1st and floor it. I pass him VERY easily and slow down at about 80 MPH, where I'm a couple buslengths ahead of him. I wanted to play some more, but traffic never allowed it. I'm waiting to see if he posts anything on the local *****/import board

I'm not doubting that you killed the guy, but I am curious how you can determine that the turbo is "not quite stock" just by listening to it?
A very good friend of mine has a 2nd gen turbo DSM with the stock turbo, an upper intercooler pipe, a stock 1st gen BOV, and a K&N with a hardpipe adapter kit. His car makes all sorts of crazy intimidating turbo noises, but the stock Garrett T25 still wimps out by 5,500 rpm. It sounds like a turbo upgrade, though!
Maybe that's what you meant in the first place by "not quite stock", i.e. he had a couple of intake mods vs. he had a turbo upgrade?
Good kill, nonetheless!

good kill.im wondering if it was a GS-T since he didnt go until you were up to speed.he knew from a stop you would destroy him if hes making any reasonable amount of power.traction is not their strong point

I have no idea what he had done. The car looked dead stock, but like I said, the turbo was noticably louder than what a stock one usually sounds like. Could have been some of the mods you listed or an upgraded turbo, I don't know.Originally posted by SPOOM

It said TSi on the back of it for sure. I don't know if all TSi's are AWD or not.good kill.im wondering if it was a GS-T since he didnt go until you were up to speed.he knew from a stop you would destroy him if hes making any reasonable amount of power.traction is not their strong point

i would like to think that most TSi's are AWD.but they did also come in FWD for those people that didnt know any better
.good from a roll, but thats bout it.

I guess it depends on what your idea of "good" is. I'm running 13's right now on street tires with a fwd TSi, but I'm gunning for 12's after the turbo upgrade. Sure, an AWD is faster from a dead stop, but I usually get into more trouble from a roll (excluding visits to the drag strip, of course).Originally posted by maroon91rs

good luck getting in the 12's.are you going to use slicks?i know a kid that had a 2g with insane power, and he could only muster a 13.0 on street tires.oh yeah his trap speed was 117!!needless to say he was spinning half track.he now has an AWD laser that runs mid 11's at 118.so basically same power, just has AWD now.i think his 60's are 1.72 or so.i just hope youre gonna use slicks and have ALOT of extra trannies, cause they wont last long with slicks

I don't know if I'll resort to slicks or not. I'll probably just run drag radials and see where that gets me...so far I've only relied on all-season street tires. I was cutting low 2.2 60 fts on the stock 100,000+ mile clutch with stock suspension, engine mounts, and differential. I've got solid mounts now, a new clutch, better shocks and springs, and a limited-slip.
I think that the main cause of death in fwd DSM trannys is wheelhop. Now that I've got solid mounts, wheelhop has been banished and first gear produces a semblance of forward momentum vs. noise, smoke, and uncontrollable vibration.
Even if I don't hit a magic number, I still enjoy driving this goofy fwd thing. I think that I can hit 105 mph trapspeeds with the stock, unported turbo, and I'm reasonably certain that I can hit 110+ with a streetable turbo upgrade.
Sorry for hijacking the thread!

Good kill, BuckeyeRoc. Those AWD turbo cars always crack me up even though they launch like a motha. I guess I just can't get used to their exhaust tone, but I do respect them. My neighbor was running low 12's with his AWD 92 tsi Talon and spanked my friends stock 94 Z at the track. We were both shocked by the modded talon's times, because we would always trash talk the car before we saw it run. It did have goofy yellow brake calipers and side mirror though.
I don't look at those cars the same way as when I ignorantly bashed them, because know I know what they're about.
