They aren't slow per say, but the early 3.8's only had 170hp and around 200ftlbs of torque. The gearing is pretty decent and they are great daily drivers (my mom has a 92 or so 3.8 Bonneville) and have enough pep to be mildly entertaining. They do have some torque steer to worry about. If the car has 40k on it and you are contemplating buying it (hopefully keeping the third gen) i would go for it.

There is no way EVER i will sell my third gen after all the money/blood/sweat i put into her, she's almost done. Accualy i have this car also, the olds, she seems very quick. Wasw just wondering on some times for 1/4. She is in perfect condition, its a bit of an old person car hehe but its a nice smooth ride.

At a guess i would say low 16's, seeing as the later iterations of the engine were generally in the mid 15's to 16 flat or so depending on the car it was in. A stock, decent running L03 would deffinantly take it off the line, especially with a decent driver, and an HO i would say would be a touch better. Both i think in the 1/4 would take the 3.8, but on anything longer the higher reving six will start to pull even if not away.

I read somewhere that a 3300 Ciera (160 hp/185 lbs-ft) runs mid to high 16s and tops out at a governed 119 mph so...
My brother did run nose to nose with a 5.0 convertible once. 3 people in the Olds and...it may have been as many as 6 in the Mustang. It was from 45-50 mph to 100 mph, I would guess.
Those Buicks aren't to be underestimated. Your gearing is 2.84, same as his, and that could be better...
